Gunk. Used it recently on my engine and bay which were really bad. It stinks like diesel but it works very well. My engine and engine bay are now re-painted and looking fantastic ;)

I always use a mix of paraffin and washing up liquid. It gets rid of most things. Brake cleaner sprayed on a rag removes the most stubborn bits. I have tried stuff like carplan engine degreaser in the past, but that is just paraffin with soap in at twice the price!

What are you trying to accomplish? A clean engine bay? Or are you cleaning engine parts?

I used to use coka cola to clean parts (poured it into a bucked and left parts over night.) Works really well. But it has to be the ORIGINAL coke. For engine bay cleaning/degreasing use Gunk and a paint brush.

Get engine hot , then gunk , wrap all HT to protect from water, steam clean the worst bits and then pressure spray, avoiding electrics as much as possible. Let It stand for ten min and the engine heat should dry it out.

I've heard that oven cleaner works well on the really greasy bits too, but never tried it!

I used Gunk; be warned that it stinks though, so wear old clothes!

I use white spirit through a paraffin gun. It's quick, you can pick up a parrafin gun for about a tenner, there's no scrubbing, you can blast it into all the hard to reach places, it doesn't seem to effect the electrics and it dries in about 15 minutes, job done. (Obviously you do need a compressor/air supply to connect the gun to though)

If your cleaning the engine bay there are tons of products.

Meguiars Engine Cleaner or AG machine cleaner are pretty good.

Make sure after cleaning that you put on some spray protector, like Meguiars Engine Dressing, otherwise things will go rusty very quickly.

I use tin foil to cover the electrics, it gives protection from water and is easy to see.  Some use cling film, but I find this fidderly to use and can't see were I put it.
