Hello everyone,

This is ken and I'm from China. I bought a 1998 classic rover mini few days ago. It is a stunning car but something make me confuse. When I started the engine and selected the gear D, the car wouldn't move. I had to step the accelerate pedal for few seconds, then it seems that the gears engage suddenly. I would be pushed out like sitting in a ferrari. It would be fine when the car had started moving. Sadly this situation will appear again if you select another gear then back to D. Reverse is fine in any case. So, what is problem of my car and what can I do now? Any suggestion?

Thanks & Regards

Ken

Hi Ken,

Awesome buy. I'd first suggest checking that the shifter is correctly adjusted, many of these types of problems with the Autos are from that. It could also be that the shifter (and cable) is worn, so not properly selecting the actual gear. The Adjustment can be fiddly to get just right and needs to be done with some precision.

Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post up the adjustment procedure a little later.

Right here!

Hope that's some help.

Take your time carrying out the adjustment, while simple, as I mentioned, it does need to be done with some precision and you'll be back and forth a bit before getting it just so. After adjusting, move the Shift Stick back and forth a few times and check again. Go for a spin, then check it yet again.

Also it might be worth checking the oil is the correct type and level. Autos are very sensitive to oil level and type and if its not correct it might cause an issue similar to what you are experiencing.

I don't have any experience with autos other than hearing about them on here so I am sure an expert will offer more advice.

Incidentally I believe the correct oil for the auto is 10w40 not the 20w50 as found on all the manual minis
