hey guys,
I'm thinking about buying a mk1 Morris Mini Cooper but not sure on how much they are worth. The car I'm looking at is described as scruffy, rust free, matching numbers and pretty complete.
Any ideas what the ballpark is?

Apparently so! It was restored a while ago but sounds like largely the original shell.

Hard to value it without pictures
3 - 6 k?

It is very hard to put any sort of value on a Mk.1 Cooper, even if there were photos showing all the usual suspect areas.
The '63 997 Cooper mentioned in another thread which was effectively without a body-shell, was going to sell for around £2500 to £3000. But that was a rare 997. An absolutely immaculate 998 could easily make £20,000 if in all-original condition. Who knows what a 'perfect' 997 could make, but maybe around £25,000.
A 998 in road-worthy condition with an MoT, but needing some care & attention should be worth between £5000 & £10,000. The actual would depend on how much work it needed.
I was just told that an immaculate 850 Mini Traveller made £30,000+ in France.
For all-original cars the price is just so condition dependent.

Cool thanks for the info.
This is a 998, from the pictures it looks in really good condition but the seller says it's "scruffy" not getting a lot of info out of him.

Need close-up photos of:
Sills, front wing to screen scuttle panel, front panel under the headlights, the A-panels, lower door edges, engine bay, rear valence, lower part of sides behind the doors back to the rear wheels on both sides.
That will give an idea of body condition which is really all that matters, apart from the engine and gearbox condition, which photos won't show.
Expect to have to do a lot of restoration.

If offered to you at the right price without going on public sale, snap it up quickly......a long term good investment even if it costs a bit to restore it will only go up. If it goes on offer to the public via something like ebay, then expect the price to go far higher......

it doesn't appear to be rusty in any of the usual places, but I know from experience that pictures can lie.
The dude wants £14k for it.

Zillons. at 14k, it's not a bad price and if bought up to scratch, then looked after, the value will only go one way.

14 K is Strong money for a Scruffy 998 Cooper unless it has a special history.

Is it this one? If so it does not look too scruffy !!.
The chassis plate does not look original on this too me, Handbrake is wrong? Not sure the way the bootboard braketrs are attached is standard looking?
This is a mk2 for comparison

That's the one :) Doesn't look scruffy in the pictures but I know things can get very different up close in the flesh. The guy said there was no evidence of recent engine rebuilds either.
Is it that the chassis plate looks in too good a condition? What's up with the handbrake - just wrong for the model year? I'm not familiar with the bootboard brackets either.
Are mk2's worth a little less than Mk1s?

I have to say that looks like a very nice car with little needed to make it really good.
Yes, there are a few minor things, like the window catch, boot bracket welding - presumably done like that during restoration - and a few odds & ends.
From what can be seen it looks rust free and any engine or gearbox problem is easy to sort.
Personally I would have thought around £11000 to £12000 is the right money, but at a bit over that it is not an issue as when done 'nicely' it will have a value of over £16000 and maybe as high as £20000. Certainly this will be the value within a couple of years.
I would love to take a really close look at it to be sure that what we see is what we have, (if you know what I mean Harry ) .

Yes I would like to check that this started life as this car too.Boot board brakets added later or boot floor repaired? I would like to see the gearstick hole too.
Could be later door fitted and therefore not the original window catches?
Chassis plate looks to be a replacement to me and does not look original ?
I would recomend you take someone with you that knows what to look for if you are unsure.
Yes generally MK2 are valued lower although I think they are rarer.
Remember the prices you see are asking prices and not generally selling prices.
I agree with cooperman's value. If it is an original shell matching number car then it has potential to be worth more and could be a better investment bet

I found this from an older ad for the car without the carpet,. Does that reveal anything about the gear lever hole?
Is it the plate over the magic wand hole that we are looking for?
