Think I'd be more worried about wet pants than wet plugs!

Like Mini13 says, crank sensors shouldn't be an issue. They are sealed units, and wherever you put them they'll likely have an external wiring connection. Do make sure they can't be knocked out of position though. You could rig two ignition systems with crank sensor(s), omitting the need for a cam sensor and giving you wasted spark with fail  safe redundancy - OTT I know.

Having seen your engineering skills, I'm sure you could knock up a clamp, or something, to improve the boot to plug seal.

Thanks guys, all good info. I have no experience so good to get some feed back, ideas and tips.

OH $#!T - I see why water could be a problem

wondering if you could use the old timing hole in the wok cover - & hole in flywheel with magnet in there ?

I should imagine you use a snorkle ?

Yeah, we have had to use them too from time to time

Thanks for the heads up on the pick-ups. I've done a little poking around and it seems many of these are Inductive type Pick-ups, certainly the Industrial Ones and those fitted to Diesel Generators are Oil and Water imersable, some to high temps too. I no longer see this an an issue.

Ethel, thanks for your idea on twin pick-ups, not one I'd thought of but I think that's a great idea and one I'd likely run with.

I love it when the mud is cleared from people's eyes.

Have a mate who used to go Scamping. So I was totally expecting those pics.

Re the pickups. Check the specs. They may be water proof etc but how do they trigger. Magnetic or optical.

Mmmmm muddy water. Will it see through it?

I defiantly think you are going the correct way but. Well I have said it already. Triggers and suport.

Seems the ones Mini Manannán quoted are out-of-stock, but they do others ... in purple too! O_O

I really wouldn't bother with those 'pattern' caps, I'd wait for the ones I linked to come back in stock.
