So after this year of competing in various disciplines in my A+series Mini (Autotests, Autosolos and Autocross) I've decided to upgrade to a plate type LSD diff as I'm looking at staying on tarmac going sprinting next year and would like more grip than my 4 pin can provide.

On the market I see various vendors selling them, but which to go with?

Minispares EVO

Quaife (Not the ATB)

Swiftune

Minipeed

Minisport

As far as I can tell they're all based on the Tran-X design but there is quite a difference in price, quality maybe? Only going to be putting 90 bhp through it!

Be interested in knowing what your comments are of them.

The swifttune one is Quaife, which is actually Tran-X which Quaife bought in 2012

The Minispares EVO is nigh on identical to the Tran-X in all but name.

I don't believe Minisport or Minispeed produced their own, and looking at Minisport that suggests that it's a Tran-X ( aka Quaife ) and the Minispeed one has the same part number as Minispares...

So in fact your choice is not as wide as you think... basically, it's a Tran-X (Quaife) or Tran-X (Minispares EVO)

Secondly, don't forget, it's not just the LSD you need to buy, it's the crownwheel and pinion and the output shafts.. budget on spending about 1000 on installing an LSD.

Have you spoken to Gripper?  They may do one and they'll have a choice of ramp rates

Thanks guess-works, thought as much. Have you ever fitted the minispares EVO diff into customers gearboxes as I haven't had a problem with quality or reliability of their X-pin diff.

Not contacted any vendors yet as I would like to get peoples thoughts of them before the sales pitch of why ours is better than their but a Gripper diff is also a option.

I wouldn't bother with a gripper diff, if it's the phantom grip SiZT is on about.... never really taken off in the UK, seem to be bigger in the US.. But they rely on the original single pin cast diff unit and then press against the output shafts, I believe you'd be better off leaving your x-pin in there than trusting a gripper.

If - and that could be a big IF - you can put up with it, a Locker will give your best times, however if the car is also road driven, forget this. A plate clutch or Quaife would then be the go.

It is the Quaife ATB that we sell. It takes the standard crownwheel not the traditional lsd type crownwheel with the big hole in the middle.

I've never heard of them being called phantom grip before but it's a good call about the single, x-pin etc... Might be worth the OP getting in contact with them

I run a minispares LSD for hill climbing on a Tarmac/race ramp rate and it works really well. Swapped from a salisbury which I had no problem with, but it was much harder to drive at low speed than the tran-x are. They are a well proven option and a decent price.

Thanks. That's the kind of comments I want, people who have used the different ones available. At the moment it looks like that one makes the most sense cost wise.

Change from a Salisbury to a Quaife for Hill climb / sprints, much better.

The gripper is a traditional plate type LSD, although its constructed in a strange way with more plates on one side than t'other... at least it was in the peugeot one I saw apart
