Refurbishing Old Tail Light Lens

Best Answer Ben_O , 16 January 2015 - 12:33 PM

If you have a bench grinder, you can put a polishing wheel in it and with it turned on, hold the lenses to the wheel with a little polish but only do it lightly and keep it moving regularly so you don't burn/melt the plastic

Is it possible to refurbish old tail light lens and make them shiny again? One of my tail lights is old and faded and I was hoping to be able to fix rather than replace it.

You can get tinting spray to put some colour back in them.

My dad did some the other day with some fibre glass resin and nail polish mixed together.
Worked brilliant.

Ok that is the simplest suggestion so far, going to give that a try later this week. Thanks :)

I put mine in the dish washer (when the wife was out). They came out sparkling.

Really? So they were just dirty. Hmm, OK. I think I'll try the toothpaste suggestion first though. Seems to be the easiest of the lot.

Tooth paste will work same as G4 polish or chrome polish as its slight abrasive.

A good scrub in a parts washer/grease remover rinse of with brake cleaner as grease remove leaves an oily residue then heat gun on high but be carefull not so get to hot as May distort.

This will bring them back same trick can be used on black plastic when gone grey heat up with heat gun and u will see it return to black.

You can buy kits which are intended to be used plastic headlight lenses. this shoald also work on your lenses

Though there is no reason chrome polish or even toothpaste would work. It might be too abrasive, so take it easy.

I have successfully polished my mates headlight lenses with chrome polish and small polishing disc on a drill.
