Hi All from Australia,

We are some what confused with the Build number and serial numbers which are on our Morris 850's (early)

Which were shipped to Australia. late 1960, early 1961.

MaryLoo (Car's Name).....Build number...49247 with Car number...9/28832/756 we believe serial number 28832 is an English number, Does this sound correct so far?  (The 756 was put on here) (The 9 may represent being sent to Australia)

Beck (Car's Name)....Build Number..50494 with the Car number ..9/54780/1276

So the Build number's being so close together, why would the serial number's (if English) be so far apart???

Does anyone have a Build number close to these???, So what serial number would go with that Car?

Peter & Karen

If no luck here, for very early Mini numbers try the Mk1 Forum below:-

Could it be that the 28832 car (MaryLoo) is numbered in the Cowley Car No. series and the 54780 car (Beck) is numbered in the Longbridge Car No. series even though both cars are badged as Morris?

Both series started at 101 but at the end of Mk1 production, Cowley had got up 509512 whereas Longbridge had got up to 1067764.

As I understand it, the Cowley series only covered the basic Morris 850 saloons (MA2S4, MA2S4D, MA2S4S) whereas Longbridge covered both Austin and the remaining Morris range such as Van, Countryman, Traveller, Pickup, all the Coopers, Riley and Wolseley which would explain why the two series became numerically further apart as production progressed.

By October 1960 (trim improvements), Longbridge had got up to 58698 but unfortunately there is not a corresponding Cowley number for this.

By May 1961 (cast alloy trumpets), Longbridge had got up to 123291 but Cowley for the same mod was only at 70376.

I wonder if there is any infomation obtainable from the Heritage Certificates?

Thank you for your reply..Miniman3003...

This page is out of R.Olyslager..Motor Manuals 12. 1961.

If you look at the serial number section....It does show the big jump May 60 and Jan 61....Which confuses us, when our Build numbers are so close together.

Are these numbers on plates on the cars? If so, do you have any pictures?

The build number is not on a plate...it is stamped into the fire wall, before that car was painted.

(MaryLoo)...Number 9/28832/756 is stamped into the ID plate...(Pictures not on hand)

Production total for all Minis for 1959 was (from Chris Rees book) only 19,749 but for 1960 had increased to 116,677 so that might explain the big jump from May 60 to Jan 61. Car nos. can indeed be a mystery and there doesn't always seeem to be the information about on this. If I had the time, I would go to Gaydon and spend a week there and do some in depth research into the production records to answer some of my own queries

The Mini production people must have been very busy in the 1960's

This would explain the big jump in numbers. Thank you.

As for your suggestion of the Heritage Certificates people....A Mini owner over here  sent of for info on a Morris Built 850. Around Car Number 54400 and received back....Morris Built oct 1960, delivered Nuffield export. So does (Morris Built) mean Morris in a Kit form. As we are told that all Mini's came as CKD Kits to Australia???

If 5,378,776 mini's were still on the road. We could have Five million three hundred and thirty eight thousand seven hundred and seventy six smiles on drivers faces instead of a phone in there ear. :shy: :shy:
