Hello everyone,

so i have just upgraded my little 998 and put a 1300 metro engine in her. I am having a little problem knowing what the distributor timing should be set to. the spec of my engine is below. if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated aha.

mg metro 1300

ballanced crank
286 kent cam
turbo oil pump
hif 44 carb
city e diff
cooper spi stage 4 head
Duplex timing chain
Metro turbo clutch

also at the moment when i turn off my engine it runs on some times. How would i stop this from happening ?

I am looking forward to hearing back from you guys

You don't mention what distributor your using, if its a standard one the curve will be out and I recommend you either buy a Aldon Yellow or contact H&H Ignitions and give them your engine spec and they will do a custom curve, or our own AC Here on the TMF he did one for Dusky a few weeks back, a standard curves going to be out and the running on could be to incorrect timing.

Your engine spec is similar to mine although I did initially have high lift rockers as well. I bought my engine as a kit from Avonbar back in the early 90's and a suitable Aldon distributor was recommended, sadly I can't remember what spec it was although it might have been what they call a Red.

I really struggled with the idle speed, which I think is mainly caused by the cam. I had it set up on a rolling road and maxinum advance was set to around 34 degrees to give the most power which gave a figure of about 14 degrees at idle. I use the term idle loosely as it only just about did when the idle speed was set to about 1000rpm.  I ended up leaving it about there and used to switch off with the car in gear with the clutch dragging a bit.

I found a couple of things helped, I changed back to standard rockers and locked the vacuum advance.

Back then you couldn't easily get the mappable ignition systems you can now so when I start using the engine in my Scamp I might get one to try.

Have you tried altering the timing carefully with the engine running ?

I really recommend a curve from AC.

Loved it ( untill I f****ed my gearbox :D )  Recurving was worth every penny, and it will be even cheaper fro you, as th eshipping cot will be lower ;)

Currently i have a standard 998 distributor but it have just brought a metro 1300 distributor, will this be suitable or do i need to buy a different one?

This may sound stupid but what do you mean by curves?

It involves changing the weights and springs inside the distributor to affect the ignition timing at different revs (and load if it's vacuum operated).  An ignition curve looks like the picture I've posted but with a mechanical distributor you obviously can't see it in graph view like that

Your distributor even though its from a 1300 wont have the correct curve for the modifications you have carried out, give AC a shout search users AC Dodd and send him a PM if he does not see the post

It won't cure it completely but a few degrees either way might be enough to sort the idle out. The maximum advance can only really be set up properly on a rolling road. If you can work out these two settings you will have some idea what distributor will suit your engine properly. If you could actually take it to Aldon or somewhere similar they could sort it out straight away.

Many thanks for your help guys,
I have just inboxed AC and I will update you with the progress I make!
I have also noticed that I am getting a lot more vibration from this engine than I did my 998! Is this common or do you think I have a problem somewhere?
Thanks again for the help guys
