I had my 1330 built for:

Rebore £120
Crank didn't need grinding (would have cost £120 I think)
New cam (Minispares evo001 £70)
Followers £30
Bearings £70
Pistons and rings £150
Thrust washers £30
Cam lube £10
Oil & water pumps £60
Gaskets £30
Machine shop to build short engine £150
Gearbox overhaul £300
New clutch kit £80
Labour to build up and time cam £200
New core plugs, cam bearings and fitting £120 ish

Total £1420 ish for a cracking engine.

If you're sensible you don't have to spend a fortune.

not this one surly?

Ha!! The engine was built perfectly. The box not so. The box builder took it apart to sort the box, then messed up when reassembling causing the crank to die.

Stock engine rebuilds are coming in at £2K to 2.75k depending on the work required. This includes head, clutch gearbox. In the last year engine parts have gone up about 15% and are still rising. Modified units are more like £3.5k. A complete engine to me includes all ancilliaries eg carb, dizzy alt and starter.

yet a lot of people on here seem to think that a decent 1275 with receipts, or good base unit and parts to build one is only worth £300-400. I recently sold my engine with pretty much all the bits to make a very good engine, including £350 in new bits and struggled to make over £500. Definately not worth doing the work as an amateur as you will be doing it for someone else benefit and probably not getting paid for it.

Yeah these numbers are definitely putting me off! There is no way I want to even drop £1500 to rebuild an engine as I know there is no way it will get anywhere near that and I'll be throwing money away, quite literally.

The 998 should't be too bad - I bought it ready to go so shouldn't require a lot doing to it. If I get it apart and realise it does need too much doing, I'll just sell that on as well.

I am glad people come up with numbers with some recent experience - I was nearly lured into it! If anyone is interested in a 1275 Metro lump, give me a shout! I might strip it though, making it a tad easier to move.

I would leave it together, they seem to make £50-100 more complete than stripped.

More? It needs a complete rebuild. Time to list it on eBay I think!

yup, seems that way. I keep an eye on here and ebay and ones that are complete always seem to make more, even if stripped ones have everything there and you can see what you are getting. I suppose people are a bit suspicious of why they have been stripped or perhaps think bits will be missing.

If you're sensible you don't have to spend a fortune.

No mention of head, which can quite easily soak up 250-500

Correct.  I had the head already.  I have to say that I'm struggling to see where £2-£3k for an average engine goes.

There's not far off £2k if you add up your costs, plus the cost of a head rebuild really.

I don't think GW is that far out personally.  You've listed pistons and rings as £150, but that can easily be £200-£250 (close to £200 for a set of 4 21253s), you've listed a cam as £70, but that's cheap to me, a cam can easily be £150-200 for a semi-decent one, Vernier duplex setup is another £100 if you go that way, it does add up and by the time you've got what is considered fairly average engine by today's standards, £2-3k really is an accurate estimate.

I do agree that it doesn't HAVE to be £2-3000.  But when you have to spend things like £20-30 for a new primary gear thrust washer to set the clearance, idler gear thrust washers for another £15-20 each to set the float there, rebush the primary gear, that's another £30 and it does add up very quickly.  The 1330 I'm doing will easily be £3-4k when it's finished and it won't be a super-dooper engine when it's finished.

Fair points. I did forget to inc on my list the vernier, and the cost of re bushing the primary gear. The list Mrs Peanut has seen has even less on it!

My Vauxhall engine conversion only cost 500 quid, and made better mpg, honest ;D

The 1330 will only be a couple of hundred to rebuild too :teehee:

I hope she NEVER comes on here.

Oh there are ways to build very good budget engines, but it's not something which happens overnight...you need to be patient and wait for the right parts to appear for the right money... I've been collecting parts for my engine for over 6 years.

She doesn't have the time - she's too busy trying to figure out why we never have any money ;)

Spent about £3700 on my engine and box (standard box fully reconditioned) high spec 1380. Lightened and balanced internals, heat treated and wedged crank. Big valve head, ported and cnc'd chambers bla bla bla.... I know dam well if I sell it I will get nowhere near that. But I know that it's built by a man that knows his stuff and exactly to the spec I wanted.
