My 1990 mini goes in for a full resto at the end of the year :proud:

I am hoping it will morph into a Cooper S 1960's rally look alike - just love them but cannot afford the real thing! O_O

Has anybody done something similar on here? would love to see some photos

Have been on the net and have an idea of the look i am after but anybody got any tips/photos?

Thanks

Lenny

early coopers had different doors & rear lights

so I would make it a MK3 cooper s - 1969 - yours will have the right doors - you would need rear lights with no reverse

not sure on wheel sizes if you go for 10 inch wheels - that means the brakes have to be changed to slightly smaller disc's

& could mean a drop in top speed if you are on 13 inch wheels - but will inprove fun factor

cooperman will be along soon - & can give a very detailed description what you need for the proper look

you could probably make the dash - as they weren't a thing of beauty on the rally cars - just a functional box to put dials / switches on

if you go OTT - it could cost you lots

but I'm sure you could make something similar at first glance for reasonable money -

a lot of people (including myself) couldn't confirm it isn't a real cooper if done right - unless they start digging around

Lots of people have done it, but it never looks quite right because you can always spot a replica built with a different 'mk' shell.

You will find impossible to fit the proper MK1-MK2 doors due to size and shape, you can mount MK3 doors on external hinges but it will look wrong due to the different handle position.

Thats the main reason why i'd say its better to make it to an MK3 'S' replica

Or go the other way and copy a later 90s Cooper or S. 1990 was the year of the RSP and they look mint. The right period for the shell as well.

Not so much the RSP, but some of the later cars have a bigger connection to John Cooper. My understanding is that apart from the Works cars, the Coopers and Cooper S were factory built by Morris and Austin etc, and they simply laid some royalties. In the 90s, John and Mike actually took cars I to their work shops and made changes (not to standard Coopers, they were still factory produced)

Everyone loves a rally look mini but consequently there are a lot out there, ranging from 100% accurate replicas to budget versions. There is a lot of information out there.

Do what you want, along as you like it, so what?

Im mk1'ing the front & rear of my bright orange sportspack over christmas, it's not a mk1, neither is it pretending to be.

Don't follow the crowd, do what you want, its your car after all :)

Found another,:

I was trying to find pictures of the Minisport (i think) rally cars, all based on 90s cars with 12 or 13" wheels but they still look the part.

Here you go, this sort of thing:

You are correct in saying the BMC and Leyland Coopers and Cooper Ss came from the factories in that form. The Works Mini Coopers were prepared by BMC at Abingdon. John Cooper was always the ideas man and he put a Formula Junior A-Series engine into the original 850. A more powerful engine plus disc brakes and a remote gear change were the essential definition of a Mini Cooper.

John Cooper always advised on Mini Coopers in those days but I do not believe he ever produced any.

Actually he was very much connected with the RSP. He was part of the initial meetings at Rover Special Products having been invited by Sir Graham Day. It was in those early meetings that he presented the 'S' Pack and where it was agreed that it would be covered by Rover warranty.

A 1990/91 Mainstream Cooper is easier to replicate as it does not have a sunroof.

Paddy Hopkirk took a much modified SPi on the Monte Carlo anniversary rally in 1994.

My Mayfair has an identity crisis with mix of different things (electric webasto, reverse rims, standard 95 Mayfair trim etc..). I just chose things I like and you should do the same. :-)

I agree with a lot of people just do what you want and fit the bits you like. It's what I've done/doing
