I have a cheapish Laser lever type that i bought about 6 years ago and,to be honest,it's fine.Takes a standard cartridge,is well made and gets a hell of a lot of use.(My daily is an old Landrover).

I bought this one yesterday - http://m.screwfix.co...5?filtered=true

Got mine from a local autofactors tho, same price. They also sold the 400ml cartridge's (comma) for £4. Its the first one I've used and it works well. Seems like a good quality tool :)

When you say "splodge" I take you mean scooping up the grease I to the cylinder bit? Mine (draper I think) has a loop handle on the bottom of the cylinder so you can "suck" the grease up out the container.

I believe they all have the handle to pull back the spring, as you say it allows you to fill it up by placing the gun on the top of the grease plate in the grease tin and pressing down as you pull the plunger back. Unfortunately I purchase grease in 12Kg or 25Kg tins so it is splodging for me with a spatula.
