I have been in the same position trying to search the forum for the right battery and not coming up with a definitive result. In the end I bought a Varta 048 for my RSP and it works fine. It is described as Calcium-Silver. I also have one in my MPi. If it is left too long the MPi alarm drains it but that is probably the same with all batteries.

This is Varta's Car battery line up, no calcium, http://www.varta-aut...ech-automotive/

This is Varta Commercial calcium range, http://www.varta-aut...rcial-vehicles/

Can you give me a link to Varta Calcuim?

If you'll notice they don't mention anything about the chemistry of their automotive batteries at all, but I imagine if you put the name of a car with a dynamo into the parts finder it won't suggest a Silver battery, probably just a black one. All the tables and lists I have checked with parts companies list Varta Silver as a silver/calcium battery because as I said I have looked into this before. That's including the link you posted above by the way. I haven't found this published by Varta anywhere though, which is why I have only said I think they are calcium rather than they definitely are. But the fact they publish an improvement of 20% CCA over a regular battery would also suggest it to be a calcium battery. The stuff about plate design is a bit over hyped, while it will give a different electron flow I suspect the real reason they use stamped plates is that they are cheaper than cast ones.

I bet you wished you never ask  :gimme: ,it's like being back in a physic lesson, all very interesting. Just to add something else into the mix you could run a race battery.  :gimme: Discus

Dan, they will not show a Silver or Blue battery for a car that uses a dynamo simply because it is deemed the typical usage on such an old system does not require anything more than a standard battery. They do however say ANY automotive battery can be fitted to ANY car subject to physical size restrictions and of course terminals. The Varta car batteries do not contain calcium so it is wrong to suggest they do, and to my knowledge it is not documented anywhere with Varta that Silver batteries need special higher voltage charge.

So fitting a Silver Varta battery is perfectly acceptable to a mini, indeed I have shoehorned an 096 in mine. There is however at least one web site that advertises Silver as Calcium but that is incorrect.

I used to specialise selling Varta batteries for a number of years and via www.battery-sales.co.uk (now sold). I have heard that Varta make batteries for Bosch, Lucas, Halfords but it was always denied by Johnson management so I am non the wiser on that point.
