hi all,

im pretty sure I know the answer to this but just in case other people have different answers I thought its worth asking.

the past 2 days, whenever I put my foot down on the accelerator the car seems to really hate it, it starts to judder and cough, that's about as best I can describe it really.

I notice it when ive slowed down for say traffic lights or an island so I wait at the lights, pull away in 1st gear fine, change up to second, press the accelerator down and it really struggles, judders coughs and splutters, then seems to get going, change into third, judders again, then calms down.

im thinking in my head it could be either the air filter not getting air through properly, or my spark plugs perhaps?

am I way off base here?

any help would be great.

We had some issues with the module on the distributor not being secured. The Italian roads had shaken it loose ! I would be looking at timing etc mate, Any popping ? Over fuelling, under fuelling .... air leak ?

The eggheads will help you a little easier with the following - Make , year,  model, engine type, ignition type, fuel pump type, fuel filter type, air filter type etc.

Enjoy fault finding

Carry out a basic engine tune to confirm all is well, the air filter theory about not passing enough air could only be caused if its chocked solid and then the engine would run rich.

Right ok,

So its a 1988 austin mini Mayfair, 998cc stage one kit.
No idea on the other bits,

It's running a k&n pancake/cone style filter. The one you always see in stage 1 kits basically.

Im gonna check the spark plugs to see if they're black when I can get my hands on a spark plug remover tool.

It's running rich because the cab smells like fuel. Especially after it's had a judder episode.

I agree that you would deffo benefit from having a basic tune up mate, make sure your carb is working correctly etc, timing is all good, dizzy is on tight and that your plugs are good.

Hope it works out Ok

Check:

Points and points gap (0.015")

Plugs and plug leads

Dashpot oil

Timing and operation of vac advance. It might be stuck bob weights in the distributor.

Coil & coil connections

Fuel supply

Float valve operation

Interesting. I think I'll need to look into checking these items out. I'm having the same symptoms except mine has always been running rich, but gets a little richer after it does the splutter. Seems to happen after I have to sit in traffic for a bit too.
