Hello,

 

what kinds of oil does everyone use? I was in Halfords and saw this stuff... and it has a Mini on the tin, so I'm thinking surely this must be the best for the car?

same stuff i use (and the previous owner, and my mini garage) :)

I get trade prices at halfords as well

I used it to start with but stopped, but a good oil tho

 

just started using Valvoline racing 20 50

 

and its very good, but may be a bit over the top

 

I think you gota change it o lot more frequent too

 

Halfords millers Castrol all good but Castrol 20 50 which I have usually used

 

doesn't have quite enough oil in the tin for oil change

Yeah I use that stuff too just because I like the old style tin, and the oil is green lol

Its cheap and does the job well.  Unless you have a rebuilt super powerful engine that you want to ptotect as well as you can, stick to this stuff.  Standard Mini engines are pretty robust and agricultural so no worries using it.

Same as what I use! Does the job but I use a thinner oil in the dash pot at it apparently helps acceleration??

Its what I use too.  Asda used to stock 20/50 in large (7ltr?) and smaller 1 ltr bottles until last week when I needed just a little bit to top the Mini up, and got told that they just took it off the shelf the day before as it never got sold, DOH!

I use it in my leaky old engine as its cheap with a trade card (about 15) but i will be using valvoline in the new engine. The halfords stuff is rebranded coma classic i beliv and its ok,however i find that oil pressure tends to drop off at high temperatures eg after a motorway run and in more worn engines.

MIllers CB40 for me, so I get the Castrol R smell as its a vegtable based oil

I used it but do not but many miles on the car, planning to switch to Vavoline when it runs out

Use it if you don't mind your oil pressure going down after a bit, it is pretty rubbish stuff to be honest. 

 

The theory behind it is, an A series really requires a ZDDP level of 1200ppm, Halfords oil has about 700ppm. Valvoline VR1 has about 1500ppm if I remember correctly. 

 

But then, if you still have the standard engine for 20/30 years ago, it probably isn't so much of an issue as someone wanting to give their new build as much protection as possible.

A bit of a harsh statement to make Harry, if your engine is standard then it does the job nicely and is affordable. Now yes if you have a new spangly engine with lots of go faster parts then yes spend money on a better quality oil.

 

Its fit for purpose ie standard engine, regular changes etc. And for us lesser mortals who do not have oil pressure gauges fitted we will never know if the pressure drops. As of yet on my bog stock 998 i have not had issues.

 

When i fit my warmed over 1293 then i will upgrade my oil.
