Ello yet again; about a hundred years ago I read somewhere that it is possible to change a Mini camshaft with the engine in situ by removing the rad and cutting a hole in the flitch panel - have any of you tried this? If so what degree of success did you have?

sounds like hard work. depending on the space/facilities you have you can whip an engine in and out within a day...

Also depends on engine ... 1275 has to be out or cam followers fall into sump/gearbox don't they?

Minimanjay on here did it that way. Not sure it's worth the hassle myself.

If you have 8 magnetic pickup tools, or a cooper S, then it is possible to change a 1275 cam with the engine in the car....

Hee hee, I love the chat that my questions stimulate. As I hinted it WAS a long time ago - I was 4 years old the day before (or after, dates vary) the Mini was launched. I even remember the mag article showing how to remove the body from the front subframe, engine etc in order to gain access. That was a first then....................... :gimme:

Only issue is even if you hold the cam followers up with magnet tools you need new followers for the new cam, 998 you can change the followers and do it in place if you must, 1275 engine out is the way forward

I had a conversation with Mini Miglia racing legend Pete Baldwin once, about how he used to change camshafts at the trackside by removing the n/s front wheel, cutting a couple of the uprights out of the rad vent in the inner wing and then pushing the car over on it's side onto some tyres to stop the cam followers from dropping down.

Probably not the most advisable method to attempt on a road car on your driveway though!!!
