Yes and yes. Hence the question. It moves and then stops.

Does this drilling in the case give access to the detent bore?

Done those.  It’s the one under the big nut on the front.

I thought the big nut was just a blinking plug unless you had a reverse light fitted. Didn't think it had anything to do with reverse detent.
I don't have a Haynes manual to hand to refer to at the moment.

Well I just have the sealing cap with a spring and a plunger that is operated selector rod. It may have just had the cap put on at some time. But it was a gold/silver seal box when I picked it up.

Ok, just had a look at my spare gearbox, removed nut and there's a spring and plunger.
I wedged a straight pick into the hole in the plunger and it came straight out.
If you can stop it revolving you might be able to run a small tap down it to withdraw it

Nice I can now see what I am trying to get at. Have a pick as well. Will try later.

was not coming out at first every time you started to lift there was a metal clunk and it fell off so ran the pick around the edge and then out it came

I'll have to have a look at the box in my car as I've rebuilt it several times and just don't remember there being a spring and plunger under that nut (it too was also a silver seal 1275gt box I bought in the mid 80's)
How does the plunger interact with the shift shaft? My memory fails me, I don't remember there being a detent.
My spare box has my old engine sitting on it so I can't easily have a look at it.

I don’t think I’ve seen an oil pick up pipe boss like that - they usually have the bolts going through from the outside into the threaded flange of the pick up pipe.

You may not we welded it up so we could use a banjo fitting for the remote filter. I am going back to standard as I now have the dog box.

Personally I’d return it to the standard setup then - two less bolts that could fall into the gearbox if they happened to work loose and you don’t have to drill the pick up out.

My remote filter uses a male thread and a 90 degree fitting. The banjo does look a neat approach.
