So what went into a 9k able engine back in the mid 90s

And the head

Thickness is 2.63”

It's surprising what tweaked factory components can withstand.
Looks very similar to my early 90's built MED engine with Longman head, except I'd had the crank wedged and only had forged minispares 1.5 rockers.

yep at the time all the I and H beam rods were very expensive and the crank tec had hardly moved on from wedging and Billit made.

this one was basically a re built Holwey base unit and head.

Are you building the dog gearset into the remote box?

Yep.
I presume the MED pinion support housing needs modifying to clear the internal shift linkage.
I had to grind a web back on my KAD housing for clearance on my remote box.

we will find out later.

I had to create clearance for the change speed gate (lobster claw) and the shift shaft. Decided to remove material from the shaft rather than the housing around the bearing. Think MED's webs are in different positions so they may clear.
I went for KAD as mines a road car and I wanted to retain the speedo drive.

If you mean the reverse detent plunger, I think I pulled mine out with a magnet on a stick.
Good news that the pinion support fits without modification.

Have you sprayed brake cleaner or similar in there to try and dilute the oil before using a magnet?
May be worth trying to blast it out with compressed air.
