My engine mounts are completely buggered and in dire need of replacement so I was just wondering how big of a job it was?

Also, I was hoping to drive 600 miles, round trip, tomorrow - will it be safe to drive until I can get it sorted next week?

Sam

It's not a big job but it is fiddly, depends whether your mini has the side mounted radiator, if so then it is a drain down and radiator out job and the other side is tight to get the mounts on and off because of the clutch housing. It is about a 3-4 hour job if everything goes right. Personally if they are completely buggered as you say I would not risk a journey and certainly not of that distance.

It will be safe in that the engine won't drop out yes! But it wont be pleasant! I would use the mini but just take your time accelerating and change gear smoothly as possible. A journey of that distance I guess is mostly motorway which won't really put a great deal of strain compared to round town.

Every mini I've ever had needed the motor mounts replacing. On two of them one of the mounts was in two pieces. Certainly not dangerous and if you have a magic wand gear leaver it can be really difficult to get into second or fourth if the engine moves (mine did!) it also depends on the radiator fixing. If you have the later fixing it's not so bad but the earlier one is a real pain.

It's MUTCH easier with two people. When fitting the new mounts don't tighten everything up until ALL the bolts are in loosely. Don't use the mounts with captive nuts, they can be a nightmare if you start a bolt cross threaded, or when you come to change them again in a few years time.

There's lots of threads on here with advice.

get the genuine rubber engine mounts

+1. And never fit the ones with the treaded inserts pre-fitted!

Just use original quality mounts as supplied by Mini Spares. Grease the face which goes onto the sub-frame before lowering the engine, one end at a time, to make it easier for the mounts and holes to line up.

It really is not that difficult.

Ah, the guy who's replacing it said he would use the more modern ones. Why do you say genuine rubber?

Because the genuine ones were designed for the job...

For someone who has removed and fitted his fair share of engines, you want to see the trouble I've had with some 'quickfit' replacement mounts, cross threaded captive nuts, captive nuts which are no longer captive, poly mounts which literally fall apart when removed and don't get me started on quick release mounts..
