Hi, Not so much a problem but a query. What is actually different between the 2 ( apart from exhaust hangers)? can anyone upload pics comparing the 2?

how is the sports pack variant stronger and could/ should you modify a standard one to sportspack spec if you wanted to upgrade your subby or run 13s?

The front and rear subframe are identical on Sportspack and regular Coopers and Minis of the same age.

There rear subframe are also largely the same as every other age Mini aside from the exhaust hangers. Latter subframes also lost the holes in the centre of the rear cone location.

Front subframes had addition mounts on them for the MPI front mounted radiator and also had a kinked front rail (as did SPI frames) and I believe both had the engine mount holes moved forward to allow clearance for the efi manifolds.

No it's the same as any other MPI rear subframe.

Rover did produce a strengthened rear subframe for the sportspack MPi's due to the 13" wheels, but I can't tell you what makes them strengthened. Someone on here no doubt knows the answer

The only thing I have noticed on the factory 13" wheel rear sub frame version is that there's some diamond shape plates weld to the sub frame to the cup that hold the rubber cones.

Here you go, the red marked area are the reinforcment plates... not a verry big difference... would be easy to upgrade a normal frame to a mpi.

So is it the MPi onward cars that got the strengthened rear subframe or just the Sportspack variants?

Why would this need strengthening for 13 inch wheels though ?

From what I've seen, sportspack only. However I have seen some coopers with them from factory. Pot luck lol.

Acell made a good posting about these a little while back. He had a hand if I recall, in the design of them.

A search will be quite enlightening.

The button that's fitted to the frame that blocks off the hole where the Rubber Cone fits, is intended to be a Bump Stop. These were first fitted in 1968 to the Big Wheel Mokes. I'd suggest knocking that out as all we found they did was break Trailing Arm Pins.
