New Distributor And Coil, Now Won't Start

electrical

Best Answer KernowCooper , 12 September 2014 - 10:41 AM

The coil needs 3 basic wires to enable the car to run

The + from the module onto the coil +

The - from the module onto the coil -

A 12v feed onto the coil + from the ignition switch

Add your rev counter wire to the coil - once you have the car running on the 3 basic wires above. let us know how you get on.

If you confirm the above then swap out the module for your old one and do the same with the coil to find which is at fault, swap the module first, these are known working items. If changing the module and coil does not get it running then swap out the whole distributor with the old module it may have trigger issues.

Hi, just fitted a new Lucas 64Dm4 dizzy and a Lucas DLB198 coil to my MG Metro engined Mini and I can't get it to start.

The new dizzy and coil are identical to the ones they have replaced (but new, obviously!) so i'm confident this isn't the problem. The car cranks as normal however my rev counter doesn't move at all (it used to when cranking). I fitted the new distributor in the same position as the old one so the timing should be roughly the same.

Any help will be appreciated as the mini's booked in on the rolling road tomorrow morning (Great time for it to decide not to start  >_<)

That's a lot of wires you have attached to the coil.

What are they all for?

On the positive terminal, the white one goes to the dizzy and the black one goes to the condenser. On the negative terminal, the brown one is for my rev counter, one of the black/white striped wires goes to the dizzy and the other goes into the loom (I assume its a power feed).

On the older minis colours for wires are typically :

- white is unfused power in, is on when ignition is switched on. Normally feed to coil +ve.

- white with black trace is normally from coil -ve to distributor

Brown is normally unfused permanent live.

I don't think you need the condensor?

Just connect the 12v ignition feed onto the coil + and the wires from the module wiring as below to the coil and try starting it then, then put  your rev counter wire on the coil -

I'll give it a try without it but it worked fine with it connected before.

OK, will try this out in the morning. Thanks

You have no power supply to the ignition system.

Just tried it like this, still nothing, I have found an unconnected earth cable that comes out near the coil, does this need to be connected to the coils negative?

You have no power supply to the ignition system.

I've tested it and it has around 12.5V.

Yeah, the leads are in the right order

Got it sorted! turns out the connector that attaches the coil to the ignition module wasn't connecting properly. Thanks for all the help everyone
