Just bought an MG TF Sunstorm in black with leather and swaide interior 04 :D cant wait to get it home :D slight surface rust on the subframes, but only surface from what i can see, roof is new and great, body has some slight marks, nothing major, and it is 10 years old. But no sign of head issues, cam issues, and is low miles, and is top spec. Im happy!!

I had 3 TFs but I still preferred the look of the F (had only 1).  I never had a head gasket go, although the F's previous owner had and fitted the uprated gasket (must be over 6 ys ago) - its still going now in the hands of a 'senior couple' with no issues and they have travelled Europe in it!!  Like most cars - know their faults and look out for them on viewing and dont always buy the first one you see!

If you get an F, check the hydrolastic suspension for leaks/damage (if its sitting like its slammed, the hydrolastic hasnt been topped up or serviced properly for ages most likely).  Some electrical gremlins with TFs - make sure the doors all lock on central locking and dont make funny noises and windows operate properly.

If you can get a hard top, you can use it all through winter no probs - might leak slightly by the window edge, but shouldnt be significant.  Plenty parts and accessories for them, plastic screens can be replaced by specialists.  If you find one owned by some more mature people - it will probably have been well looked after.

¬_¬ just got burned :/ Went to see this car, had a few wear marks, and a little orange peel on the back end, but he knocked money off and i was happy, put a £300 deposit down on it, going back with the other £2000 on Saturday and to pick up the car. Just done a HPI check on it, camr back as being a CAT D damage, rite off by insurance, and not repaired. He didnt say this in the advert, and we had a gentleman agreement ..... a hand shake saying that the deposit is HPI dependant, so if it failed the check id get it back. It failed, and now he isnt picking up his phone. hopefully he will do tomorow :/

Wht didnt you do an HPI check before you put the deposit down? >_<

There will be info of the accident damage and if he was the owner when the accident happened, he will have an engineers report showing the full details of damage with photos...........

Finally got through to him today, he has been at work so couldn't answer phone. He seemed genuinely shocked at this news of the write off, and offers it me at £1,200 rather than the £2,500 that i was going to buy it at. VERY tempting...... very very tempting....

Cat D is nothing.

They write cars off for the price of a bumper these days. With MG been no longer around, the cost/availability of say a bumper, plus fitting, prep, paint would deem the car a write off.

At that price, id buy it. It would break for more money.

+1 sounds a decent price. As Jordie says Cat D is usually cosmetic damage that is deemed beyond economic repair. It will have an effect on resale value but as he has dropped the price that much that factors that in.

I was on that thought train, but, the accident was back in 2006 when the car was under 2 years old..... so the accident must have been substantial to write off a nearly new sports car. :/ and thats whats holding me back.

How do you know it wasnt repaired?

2006 is around a year after MG rover went under, parts supply could have led to the reason to write off.
