OK so half a day on the car has seen the turbo removed and the damaged exhaust section.

Unfortunately the turbo has some axial play so i think is destined for the bin.

I couldn't believe the size of the crack in the exhaust!!

And it goes right round the back too!

And here is a shot of the turbo.

The turbine doesn't touch the sides when turning which i am told means that it could be re-used but i didn't go through all that hassle to have to take it back out again.

What do people think of the rebuild kits? worthwhile or a waste of time?

I have heard conflicting stories on them

cheers

Ben

Edit, just read previous comments.

Oil in the induction pipes means the turbo seal is leaking to a degree, this could be being caused by excess pressure due to a blocked return pipe.

Just remember mate, all of your time is free, and if you fix it for say £150 it's still a cheap car

oil return pipe on the turbo is not blocked  O_O

Can anyone tell me if that split exhaust could be contributing to the rough running? Perhaps like loosing compression or something? Or am i being too hopeful?

The other thing is, a crack that size is likely to be removing any back pressure in the exhaust which may add to running issues

Ha, clearly we're adding replies at the same time.

The hole in the exhaust may well add to the running issues, it will also add to the noise issues you mentioned in your PM

A crack that size in the exhaust could well be causing the rough running. It is more of a problem in turbocharged cars as obviously the exhaust spins the turbo, so it be causing issues there as well.

I can't imagine it would cause that knocking sound though, I would have thought that'd be something else.

I shall weld it up in a bit.

Thing is i don't want to get it all back together and find that it still isn't right but at least i would know that everything in that department is all fine and dandy and that it must be something else.

Im putting alot of hope into the exhaust being at least part culpret

In places, it was wide enough to slip a 5p in!!

Now back to the car and get those manifolds off for a de-coke

It's got to make a difference Ben.

Is the actuator working correctly?

I wonder if the engine moving so violently as a result of the knocking is what made that crack so bad?

There is a steady bar that supports the exhaust. one end bolts to the turbo and the other to the exhaust. Well that was snapped so i wonder if that was the cause? Luckily, it snapped cleanly so will weld up a treat and go back on.

The actuator moves fairly easily by hand and when the engine runs, the vacuum pulls it over and holds it firmly so i believe its ok.

Just got the manifolds off after another massive struggle.

It's just dawned on me that i've got a garage full of bits now and its all got to go back on the car somehow!

That's me done for the day. I'm getting too old for all this. Its taken me almost 2 days to get this far. If i had an air rachett then i would have been done in 2 hours. It's the tight spaces that muck everything up. No room to swing a rachett anywhere under that bonnet.

I have now got the manifolds off which was a massive pain but they need de-coking and clearing out before going back on.

I just wish this ground in grease would wash off my skin, it's driving me insane!

Someone over on the Renault forum has said providing i do it carefully, there is no reason why a rebuild kit wouldn't work for this turbo. Apparently it's the same kit the turbo rebuild companies use.

The kit is only £30 but that's not the point, if i do rebuild and install it and it blows in a few days for instance, then it's all gotta come back off again....

Don't know what to do.

Ben
