I used the inlet manifold from the dead engine as i had spent AGES cleaning it right up before when i was trying to sort it out.
The EGR from the donor engine was clean but didn't snap shut when you released it. Instead, it closed softly. I checked my original EGR and that snapped shut so i fitted that instead.
I have been in touch with the seller of the donor car and he said he had the maf disconnected as it had an intermittant fault so i will change that first

Oh and i adjusted the throttle cable today as well.
Before there was about an inch travel but now about 2-3"

I wonder what caused it?

somethings been in there
I think you need to clean things up & look at the imprints
look around the piston edge - it may be punched in there , or the piston chamber
I'm surprised it got past the valve , without wedging it open & snapping it off
unless a ring has broke off - hard to tell with all that gunk on there

That black scraped up mess on the piston is the piston. It's not even really oily. It's just rough as you like. almost like someone has gone at it with a sharp chisel and big hammer and chewed it all up.
The chamber is smooth and undamaged and the piston move easily up and down when you turn the flywheel by hand. I'm not going to worry too much about it. I think it would probably have needed a new head and a new piston at least to fix it which would have cost a sight more than my donor engine.
Cheers

Someone over on the Renault forum just said that the hole in the piston could well ave been caused by a leaking injector

I had one of these cars for 6 years and only problems encountered were egr valve,a pig to diagnose the fault initially because on mine the weld had failed on the egr valve head meaning sometimes it worked and sometimes lacked power because the valve head had moved on the stem and mine had knocking when driving.... turned out to be the rubber on the top engine mount had compressed over time causing the bracket to clunk against the mounting point....the cure was simply undo top mount and drop a washer over the bolt and put back together.....knock gone :)Just popped out for a little drive. It is going much better now.
Only one slight concern and that is a slight knocking when pulling away at low revs. If you raise the revs and then pull away, no knocking.
I'm not sure what it is right now but i will look into it.
