It needs a proper run mate, get it hot and give it a blast.

It's stood quite a long time.

When was the fuel filter changed last?

I would drive it - it will probably free up a bit

& in a weeks time , check it over again (not saying you got anything wrong - it's just good practice , esp with it being off the road for a while)

also with the smoke - ignore it until it's been for a good run - all the oil & carp will still be in the exhaust from the old engine so needs to be burn't off

I would also change air filter , fuel filter , oil & oil filter - I often find an improvement on diesel's after that

would be nice to know what was wrong with the old engine - head gasket - or piston holed ?

nice to see it looking better

Fuel filter is on my list of things to do but it will have to wait as i'm spent up now and can't afford the £40 for one.

The Air filter i used is from the donor engine and is extremely clean with no discoloration at all. I think it must have been changed very recently.

The engine Oil will be changed ASAP. He has replaced it recently and there is a date factory stamped on the oil filter to back this up but i will change it when i can.

I did mean to take the head off of the old engine today but ran out of time.

Ill run it a few days and see what is what then but i really need to adjust that selector shaft first as it's quite a pain to change gear right now.

Cheers for the advice. Ill report back in a few days.

Ben

Just been reading up about the gear linkage problems.

There is a shaft that goes from the linkage on the box which is about 4-5" long and then the selector shaft from the gear stick that slides over the other shaft and locks with a pinch bolt.

I slid it onto roughly where it was (from memory) and tightened.

But after reading, you have to adjust the 'twist' too which adjusts the height in which it throws.

Ill have a play in the morning

Just use it pal.Run it below a quarter of a tank of diesel, and run some injector cleaner through the system. Give it a thrashing (safely) to get it nice and hot so the cat/exhaust has chance to clear any sh# te out. And delete the egr valve, it's a good place to start.

Just popped out for a little drive. It is going much better now.

Only one slight concern and that is a slight knocking when pulling away at low revs. If you raise the revs and then pull away, no knocking.

I'm not sure what it is right now but i will look into it.

Just been out again and the performance is definitely improving. It's actually a fairly quick car which surprised me.

There is a slight dive in revs when you change from 1st to second but it clears and picks up more or less straight away. I wonder if this is just how they are?

Check all the turbo and intercooler pipes are tight and free from splits.

I did read that the intercooler might be leaking. It's the one from the donor car and the fins are caked in mud. I must have removed enough to plant potatoes in before i fitted it.

I might wash out the original one and fit that instead.

Does anyone know how the waste gate actuator is supposed to operate? Currently, you start the engine and there is a 2-3 second delay and then it slowly moves over.

Is this right?

If not, i have a spare turbo pressure solenoid from the donor car i could fit??
