Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Squirrel in sump!

The odds are long, but I'm a risk taker.

/me skips away to play in TMF's database tables.

To fix valves that aren't sealing you need to whip the head off and replace the head gasket anyway.

The fact that it runs better at higher revs may point towards a compression issue?

Even replacing a valve isn't the end of the world. It will be evident if you take the head off and you'll know then once and for all. If its a valve, replace. If its not then cit your losses. Its still only time you've wasted. Not money.

You need to take the top engine mount off to take the cam belt off.

Maybe its even had a cam belt go and the pistons caught a valve and bent it just enough to make it not seat properly or stick but not enough to truly fubar anything. The f9q is an interference engine.

Thanks for the advice mate.

seriously just scrap it, the price of a head set, couple of valves, cam belt kit, water pump etc is more than the car is worth.

well i'm not really in a hurry to so anything with it and i'm certainly not trying to prove anything. If it turns out it can be repaired on the cheap, then it will be a cheap car. If it's something really major and expensive, then it will be scrapped.

simple as that. :-)

I don't even need it on the road now so if it sits out there for another month, then so be it. It's not hurting anyone.

On another note though, here on the Isle of wight, people often sell their car cheap if it fails an MOT for instance.

I bought a 2.0 HDI Citroen Xsara last year on a 51 plate for £150. all it needed was welding to the outer sills. It was and still is in perfect running order. If i Megane/Scenic or Laguna dci turns up cheap with out an MOT, then i have an engine.

A Vauxhall Vivaro was on there about 8 months ago that had damage to the rear and side. It was an early one so has the same F9Q engine. The bloke wanted £250 for it! Something like that would donate it's engine, i could sell any other bits and weigh in the shell.

I am keeping my eyes peeled anyway

Don t worry about the water pump if its not leaking anyway.

If your paying someone 300 quid to change the belt for you then yes pay another 30 quid to get a new water pump. If its you doing it then check it runs smoothly and doesnt leak and put it all back together. The worst that will happen is that it starts leaking some time in the future and you have to change the pump. You'll be an expert at removing the belts from the first time ;-)

if I had a car that war in good nick and owed me 240 quid or whatever it is, then id explore every avenue possible that didn't cost anything.

of its a valve, and the seat is ok, how much will that cost? tenner for the valve?

Ps. Its easy to give advice when I know it won't be me grazing my knuckles and swearing at the thing. :-P

I hope you find what's wrong. I really do. You should go on a tour of the country in celebration if you get to the bottom if it.

If you fix it cheaply then you'll have a good run around for not much money. You could even sell it on for a profit.
