From peoples experience what's more effective? A fork type splitter or a scissor type.

Scissor type is better if you want to keep the original ball joint, if not and you are replacing then a fork type being given the large one with a club hammer does the business.

+1 scissor type generally, would only use fork type if the ball joints were being replaced.

Let's face if, you can get a ball joint off with either, but he fork type tends to be a bit more rough and ready, which is what I have, it's all there was at the time but works good enough,

Whenever I split ball joints I tend to just replace them anyway, for the cost they are why not?

I've had both. I broke my scissors type but generally I think they are better as they don't tend to destroy rubber boots and seals. When I need separate the suspension

The forked type are better when you have really stubborn ones and you will be replacing the track rod end, ball joint, drop link, etc anyway. Less chance of breaking them.

There is a third type as shown in the link below.

Problem with these is that you have to have the correct size to fit round your ball joint. The other two types seam to be a little more universal in my experience.

It's always worth having both, use the scissor type first but if its being awkward then its worth have the fork type in reserve.
