Hi All,

Just rebuilding my subframe after a paint.  Have fitted the radius arms and torqued them up.  Am wondering how much stiffness there should be with moving the arm up and down? It can be moved up and down relatively easily but will not fall under it own weight.  Just wanted to check whether that was normal?

Also, is there any easy way to reattach the radius arm mounting bracket? Cant get a socket on the bottom bolt that faces the heel board!

Thanks

in my experience theres something not right there, i have just rebuilt a radius arm and although they are heavy move very freely under their own weight.....sound to be like the bushes or bearings have not been remmed out correctly and the spindle is stiff....have you tried greasing....

you should be able to get a 3/8th socket in if you lift the radius arm up to get it in.....im pretty sure thats how i did it.

What's the Torque setting for Radius Arms?

When I dismantled my Subframe and Radius Arms I too struggled with the same bolt even though my Subby was out!! In the end I found a different profile socket that fitted.

Try it without the Rear Shock attached, you may be able to lift the Radius Arm more without it fitted?

The rear shock isn't attached. I torqued it up to 72nm which is what the rover manual I've got says.

I pumped it full of grease so can't think its that, it might be normal I don't know!

Put it this way both my radius arms if I undo the shocks i have a jack underneath supported with a block of wood because if you just loosened the shock they would crash down to the floor.

This one definitely doesn't do that. I'm led to believe they are reconditioned so maybe as they wear they become freer?!

You may want to take them back to who ever reconditioned them as I have just fitted recon'd radius to mine and they drop freely.

Are both arms the same?

I bought the shell with reconditioned subframes so would have thought they would have been done.

I have not reattached the other arm yet. Wanted to know if this was normal!

Toby - a rebuilt radius arm should 'fall' under its own weight, if it does not there is something amiss.

Try loosening off the outside 1/2'' UNF nut, but leave the inside one clamped, and see if this makes any difference.

If this frees it up then it is not the radius axle tight in the radius arm..

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have loosened off the outside nut. It is freer like this but as you move the arm up and down the nut spins around. On the thread on the inside and the outside.

Don't know what this means.

Means the radius arm pin is probably too tight in the radius arm.

If you tighten up the inside 1/2'' nut so it does not turn with the radius arm and it is stiff then suggest you need to take the arm out and check the fit of the pin inside the arm. Should be a nice sliding fit, not tight.

Hi,

Have taken the radius arm back off. Have removed the thrust washers and the dust seals, tried to move the pin and it is solid, wont slide out or turn.

Does this mean I need reconditioned radius arms?

Thanks

I would suspect that the bush hasn't been line-reamed with the bearing.
Probably done by hand without use of the proper tooling.

I'm just down the road from you (relatively) and can take a look if you want, as I'm tooled up to do them properly.
