Yeah, "low and slow" is a scene that a lot of people are into.

I personally don't like it at all.  But I just can't understand the point in threads like this full of criticism of people because they like something different.

As I say, it'd be bloody boring if we all liked the same things.

As for the Mini outdoing the hot hatches, mine used to outdo a LOT of serious performance cars up to about 80 or 90....but I got bored of going fast so I'm restoring it back to a boring, little old 100bhp Mini with an SC gearbox and normal, period Mini stuff like that.  It's not all about going fast!  I want mine to just look like a normal Mini now because that's what I want to do and it's my car! ;D

I saw a lowered Saxo going along the road today the front end looked like a nodding dog.

It made me think of this thread

I think some people fail to think about the money side of things... say you had a nice 100bhp mini with sc gears this that n other, cage etc... how much is that going to cost in reality? thousands before you even get to the engine build.

I have myself a 106gti as another car and it was at least AS quick as my mini in its previous incarnation.  and if you seriously think a mini is quicker than a modern hot hatch around corner your seriously kidding yourself. My GTI, standard a 130bhp engine, lowered a little way (not slammed) would switch direction like that. they weigh under 1000kg's by a good chunk with much more to come out if you lighten it. And would cost under £1500 by the time you added a cage.

Mini's just really arent the be-all-end-all cars some people seem to think they are.

And if lowering a car was oh so bad thing, why would manufacturers offer cars of a higher spec which come lower as standard, such as my Audi A3 sport, sure there is a few small changes to the suspension components but thats the point... you build the car to your requirements... it can be done with any car to what ever your require. Who's to say these VW's which are lowered havent been well engineered? just because they are low to the eye doesnt always mean they are incapable of driving like any other vehicle on the road. you cant see whats under the surface.

ps... not a fan of overly lowered cars, especially when they put that sh*t camber look on, just seems to be the same old people slating anything else that isnt a boggo mini...

I love VWs and the VW scene, I have a mk4 golf that although currently standard I do intend to lower 30 mm on stiffer springs with matching shocks which I am mainly wanting to improve the handling and reduce the titanic rivalling roll on high speed corners! I can see the appeal of slammed cars although it is probably not a style I would ever go down. I am far more a go than show person although I am a sucker for a bit of proper detailing!

As a frequent visitor to vw forums I very often see introduce yourself topics littered with comments along the lines of :"welcome, nice car, what are the plans get it slammed!" usually followed by a topic from the op in the technical section along the lines of: " I recently lowered my car and I have now got through 4 x ebay ball joints, 6x ebay cvs/drive shafts in 3 weeks and now theres a knocking noise, can anyone help!"

What I find more funny/worrying is the people who slam base spec small engine dubs on cheap coil overs/ chopped standard springs and are then convinced that they will keep up and out run any stock decent speck version and handle like they are on rails!

I headed down to cornwall a week ago and over took a slammed mk2 polo on the motorway. it had about half an inch clearance under the sump and im sure the driver went cross eyed when It took of over a samll bump!

Well, this has been an 'interesting' read.

Basically if it's not a mini and it gets lowered, it gets slated.

What ever happened to personal choice?

We all have our own ideas on what makes a car look good.

Basically I got out of the mini scene about 10 years ago BECAUSE of this sort of thing.... everybody going down the same route and the scene was getting stale. I rekindled my love for minis around 12 months ago and thought that some of the more radical ideas from other car scenes might have improved things. My car (Chop) made it's debut outing at IMM the other week, and while I didn't get any negative feedback, I'm sure there must have been some. We need to be different to keep the scene alive....

We all do this because we love our cars, but why knock others just because we don't 'get it'?

It really annoys me. It's THEIR car, and if it isn't dangerous, does it really matter? If they want to drive around in a restored Allegro or a ratlook Lada, so be it.

Much more like this and you'll lose another returning mini fan

Low enough for you? Less than 2mm clearance at the leading edge, scrapes on every speed bump, choppy would best describe the ride.... BUT IT'S MY CAR, AND I'LL DO WITH IT WHAT I WANT

I guess this might be acceptable, because it's a mini?

Rant over.

Exactly.

Next we'll be criticising guys with long hair. It's just not as efficient as short back n sides! Get a crew cut...conform to our ideals.

As for people that like these modern lagers, well they're simply not not as good as a pint of mild. Anybody drinking alcopops is an idiot.

Why back in my day...

*shakes fist*

It seems to be a common theme across TMF (and a lot of the Mini scene really) that if it isn't 'normal' or if you don't like it, it's rubbish.

Shame really.

I'm all for individuality - especially when it comes to Minis. I've seen some great looking lowered Minis (and some bad ones), but that purple Civic .. come on? :D . I think the onus here is on excess and just when a car becomes downright dangerous.

Just to balance this out a bit..

Why bother making a car go faster, handle better, corner faster etc.. When you can only drive at 70mph on the road anyway..

The vw scene in very laid back relaxed and good fun.. There are parts of the scene that are into performance, but many of those who I've met are still chilled out not boy racers..

The mini scene could learn a lot from the VW's the shows are many many times bigger there is a lot of variety in the scene too..

AMEN!

Jesus Christ I've never known grown men to ******* about something they don't like as much as the mini scene does. When you go to a vw show there is tonnes of variety, and not all is to everyone's taste...but nobody cares. It's so chilled out and not all the lowered cars are owned by boy racers like all the old men on here think.
You don't need to have the best performing handling car on the road to use the roads, you automatically assume that people don't know they don't have optimised performance, who cares of you can't go round a roundabout full throttle? You shouldn't be driving like that in the first place.

I don't bother going to mini shows because in all honesty, if I see one more red and white mini with chrome **** that you get for a few quid at any show bolts to it I'm going to throw up. The mini scene could learn so much from the vw scene, even if it teaches you nothing on being an individual yourself, then at least teach you to respect that people like something different to you without winging like grumpy old men

Here's my golf and my mini, I will continue to drive it even after I'm over being bounced around, just to piss you off when you see me having more fun than you

Snot that low though ;p

Ps. Do you think the people moaning on this thread would be giving banter about each other's cars not looking the same as everyone else's enough?
