I can't say I like Beetles, but I can appreciate the work your mate has put into his.

I've always thought the VW Beetle to be a great car, especially for a 1938 design. It proved very reliable, capable of great development and was, IIRC, the best selling car of all time.
It's potential for on-going development was as great as the Mini.
Drive one, as I have, with a slightly improved 1600 engine and disc brakes, together with improved damper settings and you will find it's not unlike an early Porsche 911.
The only downside might be its Nazi origins, if one is a student of 20th century history. It might not be politically correct to like something encouraged initially by Adolf Hitler.
However, it is still not a Mini - the ultimate and iconic classic car of all time IMHO.
to be fair, we made 19 pages!
"Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1][2] is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1" [2][3]— that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler orNazism."

Here's another two of the many Beetles that I have owned, neither of which were very low.

that's the best way to stay - look from afar. I was indifferent to them before my mate got one. I hate them now, it's just the constant hassle, lack of access and appalling drive. They are of an age and I am sure no better or worse than most late 30s designed cars but it was working on one that made me dislike them. The type 2 I had was even worse to work on. The engine comes out with only four bolts, true but their location must have been designed by a sadistic mad man (anyone mentioned hitler yet?). That said a Kubelwagon is on my dream list of lottery win cars. No idea why, but I just love them, if I won enough I would get a schwimmwagon as well, a half track, a Bren gun carrier and a Churchill tank, but I digress.I have to say that I love beetles, I've never owned one though, so I don't know what they're like to live with. I'm sure they probably are slow, poor handling, noisy and uncomfortable rust buckets, but there is something about the contours of their design that gives them a charm and character that few other cars could ever have.
But then I'm quite a Fan of VW's any way. I'm currently in the UK surfing mecca of Croyde in North Devon, where every other vehicle on the road seems to be a VW and I want one too. The only question is which one, and which Mini will have to go in order to get one?......
