annie's now immobilised herself & I can't switch it off. We had to jump start her yesterday so I'm guessing it's because of the battery that the handset is now not working, howver the solution in the hadnbook seems to have no effect. any ideas?

Alarms and immobilisers on minis never seem to go together well... The only thing you can do really is to check all the fuses and conections, especialy around the clutch arm area incase they have been disturbed while it was being fixed, Try turning the immobiliser off so it re-sets itself. Other than that, you'll might have to bite the bullet and take it to an auto sparky. :)
