Being a tight arse I'm making my own fly wheel puller, to remove my pre verto fly wheel.
My question for you to answer or confirm is:
What is the thread size of the 3 bolts needed to screw into the fly wheel (is it 3/8" UNF)??
Cheers.

Something you might want to be aware of if you make your own puller. You will need a really fine thread for the bolt/ stud you wind in to put pressure against the end of the crank. If you use a normal ISO metric thread you won't get the mechanical advantage you need to pull the clutch off.

Like you I tried making one as it describes in the back of the haynes manual.  I sheared a few bolts, even an M16 with my own puller. I borrowed a proper one off a mate and the torque converter I was trying to remove came straight off. My dad and I noticed afterwards that the thread was much finer than the bolts we had been using.

I have previously made my own using a piece of 3/4" thick boiler plate, some high-tensile 3/8" unf studs (Cylinder head studs with 3/8" UNC nuts welded on to the other end and spreader washers to get the correct position), and a BIG centre bolt, like 1" UNF thread.

Four bolts £1.50 tops, bit of boiler plate, free or pack of biscuits to local steel stockholder, chance of breaking - Nil. Well worth doing. I have made a few for people now.

I still have mine, although I also have another really strong one as well which I bought years ago.

The flywheel can be a b****r to get off.

I like your idea for the center bolt thread cooper man , I was planning on using a M10 bolt.

Sheared an M10 straight away with mine, then an M12 and finally an M16.

If you do make your own then use a UNF thread as Cooperman says.

Like Cooperman I have destroyed the Halfords supplied Laser make puller. Specifically the thread on the centre bolt whilst removing difficult Verto clutch type flywheels. I reckon you should bite the bullet and buy a heavy duty one from Guessworks! Save you a lot of grief and the wasted time making one. Have a search for the no of requests on here for help removing Verto flywheels.

Minisports puller looks beefy enough, and good price.

I have broken two Halfords pullers on one flywheel in the past, for me it was the three smaller bolts that failed, since bought a better puller for the same cost but it was second hand and looks much more up to the job!

Guessworks puller has no equal!

It's dear, but so, so much better than the laser ones.
