Why does it have to be auto? Just for ease of build or?... and what sort of donor car would it have to be? A landy? Or could it be literally anything? Thanks though, honestly this seems bleeding awesome (I love the fact we havr gone from a road legal f1 car to a mad fixed diff truck thing haha)

90% of comp trucks are auto, the clutch would last 1 event otherwise and it's 1 less thing to think about. The second reason is there is very little room in this frame, there are 2 places for your feet...... Over The brake and over the accelerator.

There is a lot to be said for manual transmission offroad, I used to have one and locking it in gear down hills was nice as no wheels locked up. Like I say a 90° shifter wouldn't be hard to make but it's another thing you have to do.

No, the idea of this is short and light, the drive line of a landy is way too long/heavy. Dave's is a mondeo 2.0zeetec auto that he got for free and it works well. The axles are a fairly critical choice, we are both using unimog 404 portal axles which can be converted to rear steer in about an hour but they are getting rare and expensive. Landy axles are easy to come by but not very strong. If you want rear steer you want the front axle from a td5 discovery on the front and the front from a p38 rangerover not the rear turned upside down so the rotation and diff offset is correct. If not then axles from a 300tdi(24 spline) would be adequate for a little thing like that.
If you want strong then find landrover "Salisbury" fronts, but again rare.

Quite happy to move this convo to pm if it's clogging up your thread with nonsence
