You can buy special tools for the job but you don't really need them, all you need is a pair of mole grips and some water pump pliers(well that's what I use any way)

 

A picture speaks a 1000 word, so here goes...

As you can see you use the mole grips to clamp and hold the wheel cylinder in place.  This then leaves you with 2 hands to deal with that pesky little clips!!

 

All you need to do now in start the clip off in the groove and either tap it into place or use a pair of water pump pliers to pull it into place.  

 

Job Done!!!

Good idea I have the tool which works very well, but if you dont have 3 hands then your method is effective

That's a peice of unbelievably simple genius!!..... I'll definatley be using the shifty technique from now on.

....Now what on earth do water pump pliers look like when they're at home??

In the States we call these Channellock pliers. They are known by many names.

In April I installed a rear brake drum circlip using Channellocks. Using Vice Grips (mole grips) to hold the wheel cylinder in place would have made the job much easier!

you can get the special little tool to put it on.....minispares do one, i did my two last week, saves so much arse trouble its unbelieveable.

I gave up with the clip that came with my cylinders and used halfords ones which took 3 seconds to fit!!

Must be the browser....I had a look at home and can see it....not here at work, oh well.

 

So the vise grip (mole ) is really just pushing against the cylinder then.......the tricky bit is those damn clips
