The point of a Q plate is that the vehicle is of indeterminate age, that's why it's been put on a Q. The best you can do is provide the date it was registered.

It's also worth checking with the more specialist insurers as a lot of the "standard" companies won't be set up to insure a Q plate so will either offer a ridiculous figure or will not quote.

I've never had a problem with mine - the V5 shows the date of registration. If it's been made from older parts then surely you should know roughly what they are and where they have come from or you're going to have real fun and games when it comes to buying parts for any maintenance.

I had a Q plate mini special 1100. I have no idea why it was Q plated though.

What are generally the reasons?

Sorry to hijack

Unknown age or unknown identity (which of course also means the age is unknown). Various different types of cars can have a Q simply because they are that type of car (certain kits, grey imports and so on) but ultimately the actual reason is simply that there is no way to prove the car's origin. That can either be because it's made from a mix of parts of different ages or simply because there are no documents.
