thanks

I went a bit overboard with mine but they're certainly not going anywhere. They're either 2MM or 2.5MM thick and maybe 160MM square.

Sorry to Hijack, but I've asked this question before with no success. This is something I'll need to do in the future but I've got a question. Did the early minis (fitted with Solid mounts as standard) have more reinforcement in this area than later minis? Just not sure why this mod is required for later minis

I've got an 84 shell and the toe-board looks like like it already has some sort of  reinforcement plate. Do i still need to add something like Tupers has shown?

ignore the jig bolted to the mounting point. I've highlighted the 'plate' with arrows

thanks

I believe that plate is standard Chris, my 92 Italian job is the same, and it looks like they've been there since the car was first painted in the factory.

I asked a while ago about solid mount reinforcement, and there were mixed views.  Some saying that if the shell is in good condition, you probably don't need reinforcement, with people saying they've run solid without rein for ages with no problems.  And abviously, others saying you must fit these plates.

I just got some new rubber mounts in the end, solved the problems I was having and the steering feel is plenty good enough for me.

Apologies for the revival but better than starting another thread on this. Can anyone confirm the above? Every panel from the crossmember forward, with exceptional to the bulkhead, is being replaced on my mini. Obviously this means all will be solid with no rust. Do I still need reinforcements or are they not necessary due to the panels being new?

If you have rubber front subframe mounts and are staying with rubber mounts then the standard toe board replacement panel is fine.

If you are planning to use solid subframe mounts then you should reinforce the toe board.

I've seen 'em fail with standard rubber mounts, probably because they weren't replaced  soon enough when the rubber separated. If the opportunity's there to beef 'em up it wouldn't hurt to take it. I like that Tuper's reach down to floor proper where the original solid frame bolted on.

I put it on the subframe side folded up under the floor but only used 1mm.Time will show how good it is.Look at a modern car, shape is more important than thickness.Steve..

The solid mounted front subframe is bolted to the angled part of the floor and wraps around to the flat portion. If you are using a rubber mounted front subframe with after market solid mounts you need to reinforce from the angled floor to the flat, imitating the load spreading of the solid mounted subframe. Personally I think its best to weld the reinf on the inside of the car rather than on the outside where water and road salt will eventually get under it however well you protect it.

I did mine exactly the same as alchall above and worked out a treat, with new 1mm plates on the inside. Some more pics on my Instagram link below if you need.
