Just looking at getting a wee dremel type multi tool for some cutting, just wondering what people are using. The clarke one looks really good and you get a fair amount of kit with it but seems dremel has a a reputation for being really good?

what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I just bought an ebay special jobby, cost me about £25 at the most IIRC. Got about 100 different accessories with it too, had it 2 years now and has done me perfectly fine

I have used a Dremel extensively on the Midas project. I have killed one, but that was my fault for using it on top speed for too long. It is an excellent little machine and has helped immensely with all the cutting of bolts and grinding out cracks in the fibreglass.

Do NOT expect it to be able to the same job an angle grinder does (albeit on a smaller scale). You should be able to pick up a half decent one on the bay of e for about £30.

I have a Dremel 3000, never had any problems, it's perfect.

I had a cheap multi tool before I bought the Dremel and after a few months it started to speed up on it's own... so when I set it to 5000rpm, after 10 seconds it would speed up on it's own to 10000rpm...

search eBay for Ferm multi tool.

I had a Ferm one and it was cheap, excellent and came with a lot of accessories including a 'snake' for accessing tight areas and a bench stand to hang the thing on when using the snake.

Would highly recommend.

I have a dremel. I use it rarely but when you need it it's perfect.

It's no angle grinder but.... I needed to remove the gearbox crossmember on my Landrover Discovery. Held on by 8 x  M8 bolts. The heads had rusted meaning I couldnt remove them with a socket and the 4 1/2" grinder was too big and would have ruined the entire crossmember. The wee dremel cut every bolt off cleanly, albeit very slowly and got me out of a hole  :D

I have used a couple of cheap ones and never found them to be any good. I haven't used the Clarke one but the key differences with the cheap ones seems to be quality of bearings and top rpm. The dremel is a good bit of kit but not cheap.

I got a Ferm one from ebay for around the £30 mark. It seems every bit as good as the Dremel I've used (the Dremel was borrowed for a job and I decided I had to get one of my own). Machinemart sell the same tool as mine with a Clarke badge so it's quite possibly what you are looking at. It came with a fair range of bits plus a "snake" extension. The TCT bit in the box has come in very handy for milling some steel box section in a tight spot and the tool certainly didn't break a sweat.

Right its def between the clarke crt40 (which has the flexi thing) and the dremel 3000 with flex thing. Clarke is £32, and the Dremel is £69. quite a price difference. HELP, cant make a decision!

If you are going to use it on a regular basis go for the Dremel. Better built, decent motor and bearings (which is why cheap ones don`t last!!), loads of accessories.

Doesn't matter about attachments as they are cheap. I pay £11 for a 500 piece set
