I have just dropped the oil and changed the filter. Can someone please tell me the capacity of a 1275 automatic so I can refill the correct amount?

Certainly, i'll edit this post in a minute!

Engine oil and filter change is 5.0L of either 20w50(early auto engine)
Or 10w40(late auto engine)

I'm confused about the 20/50 and 10/40. Seems people have different opinions.

The previous owner ran my auto on 10/40 and the manual says 10/40.

Everything on this forum points to 20/50 being much more suitable for the gearbox so I decided to go this route, then I read your posts above mentioning 10/40 again :)

No, thats for manual cars.  Unless this is a very early car use 10W40.

You need 5 litres unless you have drained the torque converter (DON'T drain the torque converter) which holds another 2 and a bit litres.

That should all be in there but Haynes will say you can use any oil from 10W30 to 20W50 as Rover changed it constantly so that the grade listed lined up with the rest of the Rover model range whether it was good for the Mini or not.  According to Rover if you can find 5W30 anywhere it's the best option in all conditions, but I won't be putting it anywhere near my Mini.

My Haynes says 10/40 semi synthetic although I haven't looked in the reference section though just the front service references
