Let me introduce rusty, possibly the worst metro van in existence!

As you can see, not the most promising of project bases! Its been sat under a tree for 15 years which explains the rampaging rot running through the entire van

I had planned on a full resto as its one of 3 1992 registered vans left, however, a reality check with the cost of replacement panels, as well as the non availability of most, against the cost of a replacement shell means at the end of play on saturday, it looked like this....

DSCN1173_zpsbe4f0e63.jpg

Along the way I found a lot more rot which just served to confirm that i had made the right choice, most of the front bulkhead had rotted away, both inner wings were completely shot in numerous places, tops and bottoms of the a posts, complete floor and boot floor, rear panel, inner and outer quarters, both inner and outer sills, front inner wheel arches, door posts, it really had had it, there was nothing really to start welding to!

Also found a nice surprise lurking above the headlining, right above the drivers head

Looks like a field mouse has been getting very comfy!

by monday morning it was in emr - A sad end but nil desperandum! A plan has been formed.....

phew! i thought you was going to restore that for a minute!!

Definitely too far gone to be worth doing.

So has anything good come of it or have you just cut it up?

Salvaged the interior in excellent condition ( have got the passenger seat) a pair of excellent doors, all the van bits (quarter window panels, bulkhead and spare wheel cover, front and rear subframes and a stack of bits and bobs and plan b is winging its way to me at this very second...

An engineless rolling shell picked up for the same price as what i would have paid for just the roofskin for the van! one owner with 11000 miles on the clock, needs welding on the front floorpans and sills but other than that, from a cursory look at least it looks pretty sound

Plan is to fully strip it, do the welding, fit the van panels and then paint the shell, then rebuild, replacing what i need to along the way, engine wise ive got an mg metro 1300 lump to go in for now but the plan is for something fruitier once its on the road.

found a bit of time for the van this week, have stripped the red one to a rolling shell ready to start the bodywork

DSCN1463_zps4e88ecbd.jpg

As first thought, the bodywork on this one isnt too bad

Usual suspects - the front floor pan corners

DSCN1464_zpse6ecbd52.jpg

Drivers side is worse, has taken part of the inner sill and outer sill on this side as well as the jacing point

DSCN1465_zpsb6937f57.jpg

Bit of grot on the n/s scuttle

DSCN1466_zpsd68a482b.jpg

And n/s headlight mounting panel

DSCN1467_zps6397d965.jpg

Managed to seperate the van side panels from the rest of the sections I had cut out of the van for speed

Typical, took about an hour to do one side while i worked out how they were fitted, and 10 minutes for the other side!

DSCN1474_zps7e444489.jpg

Passenger side one had rotted in 2 places, so what do you do do with rare and probably irreplaceable panels? You attack them with the grinder!

DSCN1475_zpsd658bae8.jpg

Repair sections were then made up and welded in, due to the shape of it I have made 4 sections to get the right profile

DSCN1476_zps1e412265.jpg

Sorry, havent got a before photo of this one, I get carried away and forget to take pics! but there was a 2" or so section cut out here

I am looking forward to seeing this come together mate!

Something i was thinking abut doing with my 106 until i found out that it would affect the insurance prices quite dramatically.

Can't wait to see more!
