Well mine has 2 pins but only one is connected and it earths through the engine maybe you can run an earth from the other pin or from the metal part of the sensor that goes into the adaptor

Yay, Got The Oil Temp Gauge Sorted..

You'd have to ground the metal (brass colour) part of the sensor to something metal, as said above, on the engine. It's possible to solder to it after a fashion, if you have a soldering iron. Making the adaptor out of aluminium is a bit silly on their behalf, it's not conductive. The other pin is not connected to anything, both at the plug or socket.

Right!
Finally got it working... SC sent me an extra cable to fit into the sensor connector
I took the rubber seal off the connector. There was a load of rubber sealant in the hole, so I had to prise that out before I could slip the pin in
I earthed the cable using the earth for the radiator fan. (the tape on the live is from a bodge an AA man did years ago to get the fan working after I overheated)
This is how it looks in the car now, and the gauge is working!
Hurrah

I wouldn't be happy with it, I would have expected they took it back and sorted it, seems a bit of an oversight on their part not knowing the connection details....

Sadly that's just a picture of the old one, which is now discontinued, they just haven't put the new photograph up yet.

Is Mini Spares using the same MGF sensors as the OP used in this?
I am still after installing a oil temp gauge on my SPi. I currently have the magnet adapter that bolts to the back of the sump where the oil pickup pipe bolts to. Thought it would be a perfect place for a sensor as most say that the magnet isnt a great idea there. Wondering what the threads are on the sensor and/or adapter, and if anyone knows where one could find a new/used harness (the female plug part) that plugs into it?

ok as a final solution to this, the Minispare one works perfectly! The gauge goes up to abut 120 on the motorway now

I'm looking into oil temp gauges at the moment - there are two types fitted to MPi's, the older ones pre-99? with thicker bezels and the later ones fitted 99 onwards with thinner bezels. They have completely different wiring connectors on the back, the older one has terminals labelled 1,2 and 3, the later ones have +, - and G. Do these gauges use the same sensor in the engine block? Reason I ask is they seem to have different resistance values if you measure across the terminals. Has there only ever been one temp sensor since late 96 through to 2000, or did they change when the gauges changed type? Any ideas?
