right guys, heres a query for you, i have a 97 mpi, with this oil temp gauge but i have no gauge on my dash? should i, has someone changed it, or is it just a dead sensor that doesnt go anywhere and is fitted to all MPI's??

if you look on minispares you it seems there is an oil pressure switch and oil temp guge which go into the right place?

My best suggestion would be, warm the engine up, and if the sensor is attached to the engine, measure the resistance with the engine warm. If the resistance is approximately 80 to 90 ohms, then the sensor is OK.

With that in mind, your next step would be hunting down an oil temperature gauge on eBay. However don't forget, these do tend to go for rather a lot of money, for some unknown reason.

At the end of the day, this was just a little project, to see if it was possible to resurrect the original equipment supplied with the car. Given the age, and the amount of oil that minis splosh about in the engine bay, my guess would be that the sensor you have probably doesn't work properly, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that it does though.

All the best from Bloke.

Hi Back on this project with another MGF sensor (I knackered this first one) not soldering this one am making an adaptor.

Any Idea what the thread size of the MGF one is I cannot seem to find one that's a good tight fit

Cheers

OK got the thread size now the MGF sensor is M12 1.5 pitch so the adaptor manufacture in progress when I can get the right tap and die's

Finally finish this job and its working thanks to bloke for the original idea and MG temp sensor find.

I did t slightly different. I took the original sensor and cut the top and bottom off leaving just the nut with the correct thread, then drilled and threaded the middle with M12 1.5 pitch thread needed by the MG sensor.

Put that together with a fibre washer in between and hey presto temp reading about 80 after a 5-10 mile drive

Well worth doing this now because the second hand senor's don't work and no one makes the correct fitting one.

I need to do this mod! How difficult was it to drill the centre of the old sensor..? I have a tap and die set from Machine mart, hopefully that has the right tap...

Was OK but did have help from an engineering friend might not have been so easy with my drill. Luckily I had a spare old sensor so was able to do this and car was still usable. Other option is get a pressure relief cap and use that as it has the same thread.

Is the M12 1.5 pitch thread metric as I only have an imperial set of tap and dies... (for when my rear subframe bolts were stuck)

bugger, don't really want to buy another tap (or die, not sure which ones which!)

could take it to a local engineering shop don't think it would cost much if you find a friendly one they might even lend you it I got one from a friend who works in one. tap makes the nut die makes the bolt (I think)

Glad it worked out, well done working out yet another alternative way to make it work, the soldered one that I created is going strong. Will try and pick up a few spare original broken ones when I can find them, and make up a few using the MG sensors. Will take them to the shows, and if anybody needs one just come and see me. Not sure on the quantity I will be able to make, but the offer is there. Will probably be ready for Castle Combe, as that'll give me enough time to find the donor parts.

Cheers, Bloke.

Hi, has anyone tried one of these? Are they a direct replacement?
