G'day guys,

New to forum, new to minis.

Have a 1965 Aussie model 850, standard drums all round. Want to fit discs to front. Will be used as a road car, with a view to hillclimb and club race later. Currently 1100 engine, will go larger when budget allows. 12" wheels fitted.

Seen that I can get disc conversion kits from numerous locations. Question is what presents better value with regard to 7.5", 7.9" and 8.5". Have seen data comparing 7.5" to 8.5", but only using two pot callipers. Logic tells me that the bigger the better re stopping power, the smaller the better re unsprung mass and weight consideration. Therefore thinking of 7.4" ventilated with 4 pot alloy callipers. Determine whether I feel I need a brake booster once installed.

Can I use my existing drive shafts and steering arms without modofication? 1100 engine fitted with pot joints - if this makes any difference??

Likely to import parts new from the UK. Recommendations for suppliers also greatly appreciated.

Unless you're fitting a stupidly large engine further down the line then standard brakes, either 7.5 or 8.4 will do fine for an 1100 engine. I've got an 1100 in mine and it's still on drums and don't have a problem.

If you buy the complete kits from places such as Minisport etc I think you get everything you need but I'm sure someone else will confirm. (Don't know because not looked as conversion kits worth more than the car!!!!) lol

If not, you will need to source some different driveshafts depending on which brakes you go for as they are different.

If you are intending on any form of competition then you should be looking at 10" wheels.... which will then determine the brakes you use up front...

Would strongly recommend the alloy 4 pots and either 7.5" or 7.9", and you can go vented aswell...

But... one assumes you are in Aus, so the main thing is to guage availability of parts/spares... disks, pads etc etc..

As for a brake booster ( aka servo ) don't bother... you'll loose the feel of the brakes...
