Can I Use Mgb Twin Hs4S On A Mini?

Hi everyone

I have a complete set of twin HS4 SU carbs from a 1967 MGB GT, and I was wondering if I could use those on my Mini - obviously I'd have to buy the correct Mini linkage kit and a manifold, but apart from that are there any other differences which would cause problems? I'm half way through rebuilding a 1275 engine to put into the car and I was hoping these carbs would be usable, because they will otherwise go unused and I'd rather not have to spend loads of money on a carb/twin carbs (the 1275 doesn't currently have a carb at all and my 850 has a single HS2 which won't be "man" enough).

Apart from the linkage and the manifold, you will also need 30deg. mini carb float grommets - and the correct needle for your setup.

You sure can.....you'll need to reangle the float bowls to suit the Mini manifold.

 

Minispares sell all of the stuff you'll need. 

 

I bought a manifold, the spacer gromets to re-angle the float bowls and then just cut down the MGB linkages to make them fit the spacing on the new manifold.  I think I paid £50 for the carbs on MGB manifold, then about £30 for a Manifold for the Mini, then about £40 for a service kit for the carbs.

And you will probably need new jets as they may not be long enough once you move the float bowl angle

I use MGA H4's on one of my Minis and after altering the float bowl angle they are super.

H4s.. not HS4s?  I know how you change the bowl angles on HS series carbs.  How do you change the bowl angles on H series carbs.

I don't know Doug. I got them from an MGA in California which had been fitted with H6's and they came to England fully ready for a Mini from my buddy who bought them to fit to his 1071 'S', but swapped them for with me for a better head as I needed H4's to meet the then current FIA Historic regulations.

However, the guy I got them from is arriving here next week from LA so I can ask him. They obviously can & have been modified to the same spec as the original 'works' rally Minis in the 60's. I'll ask the question although I did get them over 20 years ago and they have worked fine in all that time.

I,ve got an old pair of h2's at home, I don't know what they came off. they,re supposed to be better than hs2's, is this true?

Each evolution of SU carbs has features that are better than those before but there typically were trade offs as well.  I don't know if H carbs are considered better or worse than HS.  I know that H series have more problems getting good seals with their cork gaskets and that sometimes their linkages can be a bit tricky.  However, they don't have a nylon fuel tube to pull out or crack either.  

 

I had heard that some of the Works cars had H series carbs.  I am just curious how the float bowl angle is addressed.

All the 1960's'works' rally Cooper 'S's had H4's and until recently we were not allowed HS4's on historic rallies under FIA rules, they had to be H4's in order to fit on the original Cooper alloy inlet manifold without an 'intermediary device'. I do recall having to use adaptors to fit HS4's to an early Cooper 'S' I had, but I didn't do international rallies in it back in 1969 - 70, I rallied in other peoples cars!

How mine were re-engineered I have no idea, but they have been on the car since 1995 and it has done 32 historic rallies and won 5 of them outright :D .
