Cyril - the black 998 mayfair thats replaced the legendary silver eelis having a minor problem in regards to holding idle...or going anywhere for that matter after a long run.
The perfect example was going up the M5 to Evesham last weekend - got into services after a good 100 miles, came back 10 minutes later and started him up - aside form a varying rev level he was fine...came out onto the motorway, revs dropped, stalled and rolled onto the hard shoulder.
After checking over obvious like fuel pump, lines and fuel pot (left side of carb) there were no obvious leaks or signs of wear.
Tried 5/6 times to start him up again...he would run for about 2 seconds before loosing all power and stalling again...choke and throttle in various positions. After 5 mins he did start and eventually we got back on the motorway after narrowly avoiding a bright yellow pickup lorry
Does this sound like fueling/piston dampener? Cant really think of anything else at the moment...aside form the black ooze thats supposedly called "oil" in the sump
After long run refuses to hold idle after startup...stalls.

It can be a number of things but it sound lke the needle in the carb is worn.
Try richening up the mixture and see if this helps..
Does the car stall when you come of a junction, i.e. come of a motorway slip road and stop at a junction ?

errr no its not so much that...if the engine is running then it will continue to do so unless you take the key out and completly stop him. When you go back to turning him over again he refuses to start at least after a 5 minute wait...or so.

It could possibly be fuel evaporation in either the float chamber or the pipe from the fuel pump to the float chamber...
Does your carb have the heat shield between it and the exhaust? How close does the fuel pipe run to the exhaust?
Just a thought, I've never experienced it personally but have heard its possible.

Thing is it isn't like this car runs hot to any particular degree to allow for fuel evaporation - I have taken the inlet fuel pipe off to check for good flow and sure enough there is plenty getting through.
The carb doesnt have a heat shield, unless u deem the throttle return spring plate a "heat shield".
The fuel pipe runs diagonally down the bulkhead to the fuel pump (?) then out to the back of the car. It comes within maybe 3" max of the exhaust manifold.

Hmmm, unlikely to be that then....
Is there enough oil in the dashpot, and is the choke mechanism definitely working? (i.e not jammed fully open?)

Choke works fine and is usually required to start the car...hasn't locked in place unless I have done so through the choke pull inside the car ofcourse.
The dash pot I havent actually checked - I'm trying to conserve as much engine oil as possible as George has ruined 10 litres of my stock in the past 5 days due to water infiltration. *grrrrrr*
