Would a multi meter set for voltage be ok?

Items wired in parallel really don't work like that anyway, you can wire heavy loads and small loads in parallel without one affecting the other, 

 

You are of course correct regarding lights.  Thanks for setting me straight !

I was able to get it set fine. I just needed to get in there and start messing around.
