My Daughter's 1976 Mini 1000 had 3 sound pads like Silent Coat stuck to the underside of the roof. Looks like it came out of the factory like it to me as the same pads are stuck to the sides in the back too.

I think the felt stuff stuck on the inside of the roof is to hold the headlining rods in place

Mine are not felt they're hard rubber by the look of them.

A Quiet Mini

http://www.theminifo...1-a-quiet-mini/

BL launched the 'Quiet Mini' in the Summer of 1980. It incorporated extensive sound-deadening in the floorpan, front bulkhead, dashboard, roof and boot, plus a new headlining material. The effect was to produce what could more accurately be called a 'quieter Mini'. Over the years it was slowly reduced under cost reductions and in the front floorpan area it seemed to promote rust by trapping the water leaks.

If I remember right the improvements were only done to get some much needed advanced publicity for the soon to be launched Metro (on 8 Oct 1980).
In any case all the cars prepared for Press use were stuffed with extra sound deadening as a matter of course, irrespective of the model.
Dramatic reductions in intake roar a twiddle open throttle are virtually impossible on the A series engine, and as for transmission noise....
Probably all adds up to what makes you smile when you drive a Mini.

Which thickness did you use 2mm/4mm ? Did you put any sound proof stuff as well?

No I didnt.  The roof doesnt make much noise, just vibrates.  Its the engine bulkhead you need to insulate well.

This is all really interesting-I have the double challenge of both a Mini and one with a straight cut box... I know it'll never be what you might call quiet, just maybe hoping for a a bit quieter... I am also wondering what to do with the carrier bag full of little foam off cuts which came from behind the dash liners. (the car is a shell at the moment) I think it's impossible to work out exactly what goes where when it's all being put back together so again, I'm think of a bit of silent coat and then some sound deadening cut to suit.

Any got any thoughts/recommendations. Should hopefully be on this in the next month.
Thanks

6 standard size carpet tiles glued to the roof with Evostick works very well.

I fitted the 'sound deadening' that Mini Spares sell (felt like stuff) and it's absolutely useless. The Mini is unbearable at anything above 50mph so now I'm going to rip it all out and fit Silent Coat absolutely everywhere I can get to to try and quieten it down a bit as it's a bit of an animal at the moment.

I think there's still a need for sound absorbing material even after silent coat, just trying to work out which and where from

Yes, I'm not convinced that 2mm of rubber is going to quieten it down enough so that I can have a conversation with somebody sat in the back at 60mph.

I heard that they don't sell the original stuff which was about 10mm thick foam with a further few mm of black tar on the top as it costs too much to post. But the stuff they now sell is about as much use as a chocolate teapot!

That is what classic car motoring is all about ;D .

You have to understand how sound deadening works before you plan to implement it. You won't stop sound transmission but changing the resonance of the panels to a lower frequency makes a big difference. You will struggle to add enough material/weight to make the car truly quiet.
