Should there be some ? There wasn't anything when the old one came off, but I reckon there should be a sound deadening pad or 2 ? and some sound proof material (but how is it fixed on if it is there ?)

Thanks

Mine had some horrible brown material on it!

Not sure it did anything to deaden the sound though

Thanks. Was it held in at all or just "hanging"? I was thinking of putting a bit of silent coat (or similar) on it and then some absorbent material, but don't know what. Strikes me the roof is just a big drum unless I do something with it....

It was glued to the roof.

Its was a type of fabric stuff which tore very easily! I haven't stuck it back on, and don't plan to.

Don't they just have that rectangle of it stuck to the middle of the roof? My boyfriends late 80's had that anyway when I took the headlining out a few weeks ago, not sure if it came from the factory like that though, there was about 4 layers of stuff on the floor so might have been added after :P

Was it just sound proofing stuff or the sound deadening pad as well?

I've glued 1/4 inch thick foam to my roof. It's gone from a tinny tap to a dull thud.
It's great when your parked up in the rain but makes no difference when the engine running ( it's all I hear).

Mine had a large foam pad as standard. Planning to silent coat the whole roof before putting the headliner back in.

It varies with age, try and get something from an injection car if you're not going to buy new. They have a felt like pad stuck there, over 1cm thick.

Sounds like Silent Coat or similar would be a good option and then maybe something else. I've not used it before, but guessing it's ok for the roof

I put silent coat on mine.  6 sheets worked well.  Roof doesnt clang now, just gives a really deep and quiet thud

Which thickness did you use 2mm/4mm ? Did you put any sound proof stuff as well?
