Has it been changed in the past? Early models do have noisy PASPs.

The whining EHPS pump is a characteristic feature of early Mk1 MINI's but was the system that Rover felt gave the most direct feel during development of the R50 MINI back in the late 1990's and many MINI owners miss the sound when they swap to the later Mk2 MINI with a silent fully electric power steering rack.

You only need to worry if it makes no whining noises as the EHPS pump will have stopped working!
I have posted lots of info on early MINI power steering pumps here on the MCR forum:-

Just on that back of this, we have an 04 diesel, it's R50 and the pump makes no noise at all. Did the diesels get a different set up? Because it clearly still works!

R50 MINI Diesel is different to the petrol R50 MINI and uses a conventional power steering pump driven off the engine, instead of an electric motor driving the hydraulic pump as on petrol models. I think this was because there is more space around the Toyota sourced diesel engine.

Power steering on the earlier models seems to be a common fault.
