I'm sure I read about a guy who got a bird stuck in one of his open ram pipes once. It only needs to be microscopic particles to damage an engine.
 
You even said yourself you can't be too careful with engine hygiene.

Internal engine, lots of people run without filters and I know that that means nothing in it's own but obviously the intake is right at the back of engine engine bay

Its the particules you dont see and the volume of air being drawn in, without a filter on a road car you'll  be buying oil and seeing blue quite quickly.

Well from looking at ramair site it looks like the one
With the 40mm hole in the centre

Don't know the size of the stub stack till
It comes in the post , but it look like a big form
Of stack...
