Hi. Big problem!

My new engine and box was recently fitted. After 100ish miles the flywheel (verto system) came loose. Had the wok off and the keyway has snapped, horseshoe twisted and been ground down, and the hub in cluch all chewed up. Worse, the crank taper end is a scored mess. I've tried a new clutch and flywheel but it rocks as the taper isn't as it was.

Has anyone ever encountered this? Any fix or is it as I suspect a new crank?

As to how it happened I have no idea. The fitter swears blind he did everything correct although he confesses to not using a torque wrench so chances are his guesstimated 150lb on the nut was a bit out.

Any help appreciated. I'll upload photos asap but don't know how from a mobile.

If this was done by a garage service, take it back for repair at their expense. They should have insurance for this!

I would sugest getting a torque wrench and inserting it.....

I do all mine to 150 and then an extra heave, so more like 175lb +, I also warm the flywheel  before putting it on so it shrinks on a bit. in the oven on min for 1/2 hour...

Yoda, alas I thought it sensible to use a fella in my MOC. He had built the box (apparently his day job) and a proper mini garage then built up the engine and fitted it. We then discovered a problem with the box - reverse gear installed around the wrong way.

Gearbox dude then had it back to remedy and then refit. Now this.

The problem is gearbox dude ain't got the dollars or insurance.

Difficult to be sure, but it does sound as though a new crank will be needed. The tail could possibly be built up with a professional metal spray and gring back, but that would cost more than a good used crank.

You need to persuade those who screwed up to re-do it F.O.C.

Thanks Cooper man. The problem is the guy first messed up the box build and has since messed up the installation. I've lost faith in him and don't want him erring again. My fear was new crank and having had a mini specialist look at it today that's sadly his view.

One bolt + one idiot = major aggro

Which engine do you have?

Cranks need not be expensive, but if you get one cheaply it may well need a re-grind and will, of course, require a full set of main, big end and thrust bearings, plus a new flywheel.

Its an mg metro block. Crank was standard. Bearings only been in for 100 miles! Would hate to have to replace them for + sizes but I know where this fiasco is going!

I don't think he realises you've bought a new flywheel

It was new before it fell off! Would it's little incident have damaged it?
