HI all,

I am about to change my engine over to one i bought the other day. the new (to me) engine has the ring gear for a pre-engaged starter, and my old engine was inertia.

So naturally all my wiring is set up for the inertia starter, and was wondering if anyone could maybe give me a run through or points to watch out for when changing the wiring to set it up for the pre-engaged type?

 

Oh and yes, i will be changing for the correct starter motor too ;)

change over to your old clutch & flywheel would be easyer.

It has crossed my mind to do that. Still undecided, as aren't pre-engaged starters generally the better form of starter?

I use the older type for racing & on 3 rd mini's & I don't have any problems & you can get them cheap as chips

Yea I have used them for a few years and been ok. I have never changed clutch and flywheel on a verto system.only pre. Is it just a new bolt and washer I would need?

You should be able to use all the bits off your old unit. If it's not damaged

Really? Does it not have a tab washer on the verto?I know the pre verto does.

Yes but you could/can re-use if it's not had it . To be safe just get a new bolt & washer

Yeah I thought so. Never best practice to re use tab washers. Do you need a specific mini puller do you know? Surely a normal puller would get it off?

Mini clutch puller will do the two types they come with the bolts as there is two different threads

Right I have decided to change the wiring rather than my running gear. Can anyone help with the wiring changes I would need to make from the remote solenoid to the pre engaged starter solenoid? Thanks

It's a fairly easy swap and uses pretty much the esisting wiring.

 

Move the thick starter cable from the switched side of the solenoid to the live side, and connect the other end to the solenoid on the new starter motor.

Disconnect the the white/red ignition wire from the old solenoid and extend it to the terminal on the starter solenoid.

 

Much easier than swapping flywheels.

We changed the ring gear on my flywheel to run a pre-engaged starter or a pre-verto clutch. It is a bit of a pain to do.

 

I'd say just change the wiring.

Thanks chaps. Thats what I thought after I attempted to remove the flywheel hoping it would pull off nicely.so after an hour of trying it hadnt budged at all so I decided that was a bad idea and its going to be the wiring that gets the chop! :)
